Get the gear down before the gate
Preparing for a stable approach will give you time to decide on whether to attempt the landing or going around. Too much altitude with a high sink rate will result in carrying too much speed onto the runway. Configuring flaps and the gear late also won't help the speed decay.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,596 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,596 m of the 1,829 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 752 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Bombardier Challenger 350 taxied from the parking area to runway 19 at KJAC Jackson Hole Airport, a movement that lasted 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nm.
During the departure roll on runway 19, the aircraft used a takeoff distance of 1,200 m, representing 62 % of the runway. Liftoff was achieved at 126 kt. Ambient conditions were temperature 16 °C with wind 1 kt from 270 °, a cross-wind of 1 kt and no head-wind.
Enroute climb began approximately 1 mile south of KJAC, with the aircraft climbing from 7,674 ft asl to 42,589 ft asl, an increase of 34,916 ft accomplished in 26 minutes while covering 166 nm.
Level cruise was established 14 miles south-west of 10WY Willow Creek Ranch Airport and continued for 139 minutes, during which 1,089 nm were flown.
Descent started 1 mile south-east of TN24 Spencer Field, with altitude decreasing from 43,008 ft asl to 2,727 ft asl, a loss of 40,282 ft over 24 minutes and a distance of 134 nm.
A further climb segment commenced 1 mile south-west of North Druid Hills, raising the aircraft from 2,656 ft asl to 3,134 ft asl, an increase of 477 ft in 1 minute while covering 3 nm.
A short level cruise followed overhead of Scottdale, lasting 2 minutes and covering 6 nm.
The approach to KPDK DeKalb Peachtree Airport was conducted in a right-hand pattern. Entry to the pattern covered less than 1 nm in 8 seconds. The downwind turn spanned 1 nm with a runway angle of 137.4 °. The downwind leg was less than 1 nm in 5 seconds. The base-leg turn covered 2 nm with a runway angle of 0.0 °. Final approach to runway 03R descended from 1,638 ft agl to 153 ft agl in 85 seconds and was scored on the stabilisation gates.
Landing on runway 03R was performed with a runway length of 1,829 m. The threshold speed was 127 kt and the touchdown point was 327 m beyond the touchdown zone. Touchdown speed was 101 kt, and touchdown rate was fair at minus 269 fpm. The aircraft was slightly misaligned by 7.1 m from the centreline. Local weather reported temperature 15 °C with wind 1 kt from 270 °, a cross-wind of 1 kt and no head-wind.
Runway rollout covered a total landing distance of 1,506 m, 82 % of the runway, and the rollout alignment was slightly off centreline by 8.6 m.
The aircraft taxied from the runway to the parking area in 3 minutes, covering less than 1 nm.
In total, the flight covered 1,409 nm, took 206 minutes, and consumed 2,750 kg of fuel.
The Bombardier Challenger 350 approached runway 03R at KPDK DeKalb Peachtree Airport with an unstable assessment at the 1,000 ft gate: the landing gear was not down, the aircraft was off the centreline and more than 20 kt above VREF. Descent was from 1,638 ft agl to 153 ft agl in 85 seconds and the approach was scored on the stabilisation gates.
At threshold the height was good and the threshold speed was recorded as good at 127 kt, indicating the aircraft met the required speed for the flare.
Touchdown occurred 327 m beyond the touchdown zone with a touchdown speed of 101 kt judged good and a vertical rate of minus 269 fpm rated fair. The touchdown point was slightly misaligned by 7.1 m from the centreline, and the total landing distance was 1,506 m, representing 82 % of the 1,829 m runway.
During rollout the aircraft remained slightly misaligned, deviating 8.6 m from the centreline, while local weather was 15 °C with wind 1 kt from 270°, crosswind 1 kt and headwind 0 kt.
To improve future performance, ensure the gear is lowered and speed is within VREF by the 1,000 ft gate to achieve a stable approach, and apply precise lateral control to keep the aircraft centred on the runway at touchdown and through rollout.
