Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,625 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,625 m of the 2,977 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 658 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Split Airport, taking approximately 3 minutes and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 05, with the aircraft lifting off at a speed of 151 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 30 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 12 knots at a direction of 70 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 11 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it began its enroute climb from an initial altitude of 669 feet above sea level to a maximum altitude of 19,503 feet above sea level, an increase of 18,834 feet in just 9 minutes. This climb phase covered a distance of 35 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise phase started approximately 19 miles southwest of Primosten, Croatia, and lasted for 50 minutes, covering a distance of 284 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its enroute descent from a maximum altitude of 19,485 feet above sea level to an altitude of 6,050 feet above sea level, a decrease of 13,435 feet in 20 minutes. This descent phase covered a distance of 41 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, this time starting 1 mile south of Vespolate, Italy, and lasting for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The aircraft continued its descent from an altitude of 5,834 feet above sea level to an altitude of 5,225 feet above sea level, a decrease of 608 feet in 2 minutes. This descent phase covered a distance of 6 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, starting 1 mile north of Mede, Italy, and lasting for 8 minutes, covering a distance of 16 nautical miles.
The final descent phase began 1 mile north of Cassolnovo, Italy, and resulted in a decrease of 1,948 feet in altitude from 3,939 feet above sea level to 1,991 feet above sea level in just 4 minutes. This descent phase covered a distance of 10 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 35R at Milan Malpensa International Airport, heading in a southerly direction at an altitude of 1,257 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 24 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 4 knots at a direction of 230 degrees.
The aircraft landed on runway 35R, with a touchdown point located 245 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 125 knots, which was considered good, and the touchdown rate was smooth at -108 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was perfect.
The total landing distance was 1,547 meters, which accounted for 52% of the runway length. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area, taking approximately 8 minutes and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 405 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 110 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 5,928 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at Milan Malpensa International Airport (LIMC) on runway 35R, achieving a high score of 95.7%. The aircraft approached the runway from the south, heading 349.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,257 feet above ground level (agl).
The final approach was executed smoothly, with the aircraft touching down on the runway at a speed of 125 knots, which was within the target range. The touchdown point was 245 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, but this was not considered a significant deviation. The aircraft's descent rate was also smooth, at -108 feet per minute (fpm), indicating a well-controlled landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 24°C and a gentle wind of 4 knots from 230°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 knots, and the tailwind component was even weaker at 2 knots. These conditions contributed to a stable and predictable landing.
The runway length at LIMC is 2,977 meters, providing a sufficient margin for the aircraft to stop safely after touchdown. The threshold height at 62 feet agl was above the target, but this did not affect the landing performance. The threshold speed was also within the target range at 131 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,547 meters, which is 52% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop quickly and efficiently after touchdown. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, with the aircraft maintaining a straight and stable path after touchdown.
Overall, the landing was executed well, with the aircraft touching down smoothly and stopping safely within a short distance. The high score of 95.7% reflects the crew's skill and experience in executing a precise and controlled landing.
