Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,747 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 718 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 14 at LFLE Chambéry Challes-les-Eaux Airfield, where the DHC2 aircraft took off after a distance of 487 meters, which accounted for 49% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 83 knots. At the time of takeoff, the local temperature was 13 degrees Celsius.
The initial enroute level cruise started overhead Challes-les-Eaux, lasting only 1 minute and covering less than 1 nautical mile. Following this brief cruise, the aircraft began an enroute climb from 1,404 feet above sea level to 2,140 feet, an increase of 736 feet, which was achieved in 2 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another enroute level cruise, this time overhead Jacob-Bellecombette, which lasted 2 minutes and covered 3 nautical miles.
As the flight progressed, the aircraft began its final approach to runway 36 at RB03 Aix-les-Bains Bourget Lake, coming in from the south at a heading of 358.0 degrees and at an altitude of 725 feet above ground level, which was 4 nautical miles from the runway. However, the pilot decided to execute a go-around at an altitude of 45 feet above ground level.
The aircraft then successfully landed on runway 36, with a touchdown distance of 201 meters, which was considered good. The touchdown speed was 63 knots, and the touchdown rate was heavy at -618 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the local temperature at the time of landing was 14 degrees Celsius.
The total landing distance was 300 meters, which accounted for 17% of the runway. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 14.0 meters from the centerline. The total flight distance was 11 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 8 minutes. The aircraft used 9 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The DHC2 aircraft successfully landed at RB03 Aix-les-Bains Bourget Lake, achieving a score of 78.4%. The final approach was conducted from the south, heading 358.0° at 4 nautical miles and 725 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 36, which has a length of 1,747 meters.
The landing was characterized by a good threshold height, indicating that the aircraft was properly configured for landing. The threshold speed, which is the speed at which the aircraft should touch down on the runway, was 64 kt. The touchdown distance was also good, measuring 201 meters. The touchdown speed was 63 kt, which is slightly below the threshold speed, indicating a smooth and controlled landing.
However, the touchdown rate was heavy, measuring -618 feet per minute (fpm). A heavy touchdown rate can be a concern as it may indicate that the aircraft is touching down too quickly, which can put excessive stress on the landing gear and potentially lead to damage. Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were mild, with a temperature of 14°C. The total landing distance was 300 meters, which is only 17% of the runway length. This indicates that the aircraft was able to stop quickly after touchdown, which is a desirable outcome.
One area for improvement was the runway rollout alignment, which was slightly misaligned by 14.0 meters from the centreline. This may indicate that the pilot could have done a better job of aligning the aircraft with the runway after touchdown, potentially leading to a longer rollout distance. Overall, the landing was successful, but there are areas for improvement to achieve a higher score.
