Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 12,791 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,438 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 21 at KFOA Flora Municipal Airport, where the Cessna CJ4 Citation took off with a takeoff distance of 1,873 ft, which accounted for 38% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 145 kn, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 60 °F and a wind speed of 1 kn at 270 °, resulting in a negligible crosswind and headwind.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb 1 mile south of Flora, Illinois, and ascended from 1,402 ft above sea level to 19,056 ft, an increase of 17,654 ft in just 8 minutes, covering a distance of 35 nm. The enroute level cruise began 7 miles northwest of Sandoval, Illinois, and lasted for 38 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 241 nm.
The enroute descent started 1 mile west of KLXT Lee's Summit Municipal Airport in Lee's Summit, Missouri, and the aircraft descended from 19,909 ft to 2,349 ft, a decrease of 17,560 ft in 14 minutes, covering a distance of 56 nm. The final approach to runway 31 at KFOE Topeka Regional Airport was made from the southeast, with a heading of 317.0 ° at 4 nm and 1,269 ft above ground level.
The landing on runway 31 at KFOE Topeka Regional Airport was successful, with a touchdown point 176 ft beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 96 kn, which was good, and the touchdown rate was fair at -260 fpm. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 61 °F and a wind speed of 1 kn at 270 °, resulting in a negligible crosswind and headwind.
The total landing distance was 2,587 ft, which accounted for 20% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, and the aircraft taxied to the parking area from the runway in just 1 minute, covering a distance of less than 1 nm. The total flight distance was 339 nm, and the flight duration was 68 minutes, during which the aircraft used 0 lbs of fuel.
The Cessna CJ4 Citation successfully landed at KFOE Topeka Regional Airport, achieving a high score of 98.8%. The aircraft approached the runway from the southeast, heading 317.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,269 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a precise final approach, taking into account the runway's length of 12,791 feet and its orientation.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 108 knots. The touchdown point was located 176 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. The touchdown speed of 96 knots was within the acceptable range, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown rate of -260 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, suggesting that the pilot could have achieved a more gradual descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 61°F and a light wind of 1 knot from 270°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind and headwind, making the landing even more manageable. The total landing distance of 2,587 feet was only 20% of the runway's length, demonstrating the aircraft's excellent braking performance and the pilot's skillful control.
The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot maintained a steady and controlled rate of deceleration throughout the landing process. Overall, the Cessna CJ4 Citation's landing at KFOE Topeka Regional Airport was a success, with the pilot executing a precise and controlled approach, touchdown, and rollout.
