Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 11,515 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 845 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The Airbus A320 then departed from runway 22R at KBOS Logan International Airport, with a takeoff distance of 4,692 feet, which accounted for 67% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 148 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 46°F temperature and a wind speed of 6 knots at 170 degrees. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the headwind was 5 knots. The enroute climb started overhead the MA17 Avco/Lowell Heliport in Lowell, Massachusetts, where the aircraft climbed from an altitude of 1,008 feet above sea level to 36,194 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,186 feet in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 65 nautical miles.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, which started 1 mile north of Ludlow, Massachusetts, and lasted for 18 minutes, covering a distance of 155 nautical miles. The enroute descent began 1 mile southwest of PA68 Bugs Airport in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, where the aircraft descended from 36,180 feet above sea level to 1,570 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,610 feet in 24 minutes, covering a distance of 140 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 19C at KIAD Washington Dulles International Airport was made from the north, with a heading of 181.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,267 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 19C, which had a length of 11,515 feet, was successful, with a threshold height that was good and a threshold speed that was slightly above the target at 139 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 842 feet, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 133 knots, and the touchdown rate was fair at -258 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 10 feet from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 39°F temperature and a wind speed of 8 knots at 195 degrees, with a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 8 knots.
The total landing distance was 4,040 feet, which accounted for 35% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took just 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 368 nautical miles, taking 72 minutes, and the aircraft used 7,239 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at KIAD Washington Dulles International Airport on runway 19C, achieving a score of 99.6%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north, heading 181.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,267 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot maintained a good threshold height, which is a crucial aspect of a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 138 kt, registering at 139 kt. However, the touchdown distance of 842 feet was considered good, indicating that the pilot had sufficient control over the aircraft's descent. The touchdown speed of 133 kt was a little fast, but not excessively so, and the touchdown rate of -258 feet per minute (fpm) was fair.
One notable aspect of the landing was the slight misalignment of the runway touchdown position, which was 10 feet off the centreline. This may have been due to a slight deviation in the pilot's approach or a minor issue with the aircraft's navigation system. Nevertheless, the pilot managed to correct the alignment during the rollout, ensuring a smooth and safe landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 39°F and a wind speed of 8 kt from 195°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 kt, while the headwind component was 8 kt, which helped to stabilize the aircraft's approach. The total landing distance of 4,040 feet was 35% of the runway length, indicating that the pilot had sufficient control over the aircraft's descent and rollout.
Overall, the Airbus A320's landing at KIAD Washington Dulles International Airport was a successful one, with the pilot demonstrating good control and precision throughout the approach and rollout. The slight deviations in speed and alignment were minor and did not compromise the safety of the landing.
