Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,931 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 336 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A320, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport, taking approximately 9 minutes to cover a distance of 2 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 29, with the aircraft lifting off after a takeoff distance of 1,777 meters, which accounted for 64% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 154 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it encountered local weather conditions of 12°C temperature and a wind speed of 11 knots at 214 degrees. The crosswind was 11 knots, while the headwind was 2 knots. The enroute climb started overhead Rebiechowo, a location in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland, and continued to an altitude of 35,966 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,541 feet in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 118 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which began 17 miles southeast of Degerhamn, a location in Kalmar, Sweden. This phase lasted for 58 minutes and covered a distance of 396 nautical miles. The enroute descent phase started 22 miles northwest of Fagernes Airport, Leirin Fagernes, a location in Innlandet, Norway, and continued to an altitude of 1,427 feet above sea level, a decrease of 33,805 feet in 25 minutes, covering a distance of 108 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 06 at Ålesund Airport, Vigra, was made from the southwest, heading 65.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,375 feet above ground level. The landing took place on a runway with a length of 1,931 meters, and the threshold height was good. The threshold speed was also good at 141 knots, while the touchdown distance was 338 meters. However, the touchdown speed of 135 knots was a little fast, and the touchdown rate was firm at -356 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.2 meters from the centerline, and the local weather conditions at the time of landing were 9°C temperature and a wind speed of 17 knots at 60 degrees. The crosswind was 1 knot, while the headwind was 17 knots. The total landing distance was 981 meters, accounting for 51% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxiied to the parking area from the runway, taking approximately 2 minutes to cover a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 630 nautical miles, taking 115 minutes, and the aircraft used 4,340 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at ENAL Ålesund Airport, Vigra, with a score of 97.7%. The aircraft approached the runway from the southwest, heading 65.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,375 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a precise final approach, taking into account the local weather conditions, which included a temperature of 9°C and a wind speed of 17 knots at 60°.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on runway 06, which has a length of 1,931 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 141 knots. The touchdown distance was within the acceptable range at 338 meters. However, the touchdown speed of 135 knots was slightly faster than the ideal speed, resulting in a firm touchdown rate of -356 feet per minute (fpm).
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 3.2 meters, which may have been due to the crosswind component of 1 knot. Despite this, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the landing roll.
The total landing distance of 981 meters was 51% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range. Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot demonstrated good control and precision during the approach and landing phases.
