MY FS FLIGHTS
Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,906 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,906 m of the 2,434 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,136 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-MAX8, then departed from runway 06 at Shannon Airport (EINN), Ireland. The takeoff distance was 1,287 meters, which accounted for 42% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 161 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 14°C, with a wind speed of 6 knots at 129°. The crosswind component was 6 knots, while the headwind component was 1 knot. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile west of Shannon, and climbed from 1,018 feet above sea level to 30,280 feet above sea level, an increase of 29,262 feet, in 14 minutes and covering 72 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, starting 1 mile east of Rhode, Ireland, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering 12 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its first descent, starting 2 miles south east of Enfield, Ireland, and descended from 29,805 feet above sea level to 17,077 feet above sea level, a decrease of 12,728 feet, in 13 minutes and covering 85 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting 5 miles north of Amlwch, Wales, and lasted for 5 minutes, covering 28 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its second descent, starting 7 miles north west of Rhyl, Wales, and descended from 16,785 feet above sea level to 1,551 feet above sea level, a decrease of 15,234 feet, in 15 minutes and covering 52 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 23R at Manchester Airport (EGCC) was from the north east, with a heading of 231.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,314 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 23R, which had a length of 2,434 meters, was not ideal, with the threshold height being above the target and the threshold speed being excessively high at 207 knots.
The touchdown point was 746 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 194 knots, which was also excessively fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -289 feet per minute. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 12.4 meters from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 5°C, with a wind speed of 6 knots at 100°. The crosswind component was 4 knots, while the tailwind component was 4 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,851 meters, which accounted for 76% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 11.9 meters from the centreline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 6 minutes and covered 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 257 nautical miles, taking 56 minutes, and the aircraft used 2,080 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 737-MAX8 aircraft successfully landed at Manchester Airport's runway 23R, but the landing was not without its issues. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the north east, heading 231.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,314 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was conducted with a score of 73.2%, indicating that the landing did not meet the desired standards.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down 746 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation from the intended landing spot. The touchdown speed of 194 knots was also excessively high, indicating that the pilot may have applied too much reverse thrust or failed to properly configure the aircraft for landing. The touchdown rate of -289 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair, suggesting that the pilot was able to control the descent and touchdown.
The runway touchdown position was also misaligned by 12.4 meters from the centerline, which could have contributed to the aircraft's deviation from the intended landing spot. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 5°C and winds of 6 knots at 100°. The crosswind and tailwind components were both 4 knots, which is relatively minimal and should not have significantly impacted the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,851 meters was 76% of the available runway length, which is a relatively high percentage. This suggests that the aircraft may have taken a longer time to come to a stop after landing, which could have increased the risk of overrun or other safety issues. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 11.9 meters from the centerline, which could have contributed to the aircraft's deviation from the intended landing spot.
Overall, while the Boeing 737-MAX8 aircraft was able to land safely at Manchester Airport, the landing was not without its issues. The pilot may have benefited from additional training or guidance to improve their landing technique and reduce the risk of safety issues.
