Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 7,404 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,890 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 21 at KTOC Toccoa Airport - R.G. Letourneau Field, where the Cessna CJ4 Citation took off with a takeoff distance of 2,099 ft, which accounted for 42% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 153 kn, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 60 °F and a wind speed of 1 kn at 270 °, resulting in a negligible crosswind and headwind.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb 1 mile south east of Toccoa, rising from 1,980 ft asl to 8,008 ft asl, an increase of 6,028 ft in just 4 minutes, covering a distance of 14 nm. The climb was followed by a level cruise that started 3 miles west of Clarkesville and lasted for 13 minutes, covering a distance of 65 nm.
The aircraft then began its enroute descent 1 mile east of Dalton, descending from 8,001 ft asl to 3,802 ft asl, a decrease of 4,198 ft in 4 minutes, covering a distance of 19 nm. Following this, the aircraft entered another level cruise, this time starting 4 miles south of Chickamauga and lasting for 4 minutes, covering a distance of 1 nm.
The descent continued from 3,804 ft asl to 1,973 ft asl, a decrease of 1,831 ft in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 10 nm. The final approach to runway 02 at KCHA Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (Lovell Field) was made from the south, heading 17.0 ° at 4 nm and 1,289 ft agl.
The landing on runway 02 was smooth, with a touchdown speed of 89 kn and a touchdown rate of -108 fpm. The touchdown point was 475 ft beyond the touchdown zone, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 14 ft from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 59 °F and a wind speed of 1 kn at 270 °, resulting in a negligible crosswind and headwind.
The total landing distance was 2,849 ft, which accounted for 38% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good, and the aircraft taxied to the parking from the runway in just 1 minute, covering a distance of less than 1 nm. The total flight distance was 115 nm, and the flight duration was 35 minutes, with no fuel consumption reported.
The Cessna CJ4 Citation successfully landed at KCHA Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (Lovell Field) with a score of 96.1%. The aircraft approached the runway from the south, heading 17.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,289 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot maintained a good threshold height, which is a crucial aspect of a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was recorded at 108 knots, which is within the acceptable range. The touchdown point was located 475 feet beyond the touchdown zone, indicating a slight overrun. However, the touchdown speed of 89 knots was good, and the touchdown rate of -108 feet per minute (fpm) was smooth, suggesting a controlled descent.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 14 feet from the centerline, which may require some adjustments during the landing roll. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 1 knot from 270°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, and there was no headwind.
The total landing distance of 2,849 feet was 38% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the landing roll and was able to align the aircraft with the centerline.
Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot demonstrated good skills and judgment in navigating the aircraft to a safe touchdown. However, the slight overrun and misaligned touchdown position may require some attention to improve the landing performance.
