Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,689 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,689 m of the 2,484 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 750 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 6 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 32R at RJOO Osaka International Airport. The takeoff distance was 850 meters, which accounted for 46% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 149 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 12°C and a wind speed of 7 knots from a direction of 319°. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 7 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead Kawanishi in Hyogo, Japan. The climb took 11 minutes and covered 50 nautical miles, with the aircraft ascending from 1,061 feet above sea level to 27,188 feet above sea level, an increase of 26,128 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 3 miles northeast of Narutocho-mitsuishi in Tokushima-ken, Japan. This phase lasted for 34 minutes and covered 184 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 28 miles east of Takanabe in Miyazaki, Japan. The descent took 20 minutes and covered 22 nautical miles, with the aircraft descending from 27,033 feet above sea level to 1,981 feet above sea level, a decrease of 25,052 feet.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 11 miles east of RJFM Miyazaki Airport in Miyazaki, Japan. This phase lasted for 2 minutes and covered 7 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 27 at RJFM Miyazaki Airport was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 265.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,259 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 27 at RJFM Miyazaki Airport, which had a length of 2,484 meters, was characterized by a threshold height that was excessively over target. However, the threshold speed was good at 144 knots. The touchdown point was 296 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was a little fast at 139 knots. The touchdown rate was firm at -381 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned by 20.3 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 10°C and a wind speed of 11 knots from a direction of 269°. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 11 knots. The total landing distance was 1,571 meters, which accounted for 63% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 19.9 meters from the centerline.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 269 nautical miles, and the flight took 74 minutes. The aircraft used 3,089 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at RJFM Miyazaki Airport, but the landing was not without its challenges. The final approach to runway 27 from the east, heading 265.0° at 4 nm and 1,259 ft above ground level (agl), was executed with a score of 72.1%. This indicates that while the landing was not perfect, it was still considered satisfactory.
One of the notable issues during the landing was the excessive height of the threshold at 100 ft agl, which was above the target height. However, the threshold speed was good at 144 kt, indicating that the pilot maintained a safe speed during the approach. The touchdown point was 296 m beyond the touchdown zone, which suggests that the pilot may have been a bit too far back from the optimal touchdown point.
The touchdown speed of 139 kt was slightly faster than the ideal speed, and the touchdown rate was firm at -381 fpm. This indicates that the aircraft touched down with a relatively high rate of descent, which may have contributed to the slightly fast touchdown speed. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned by 20.3 m from the centreline, which could have made the landing more challenging.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 10 °C and a wind speed of 11 kt at 269°. The crosswind was minimal at 1 kt, while the headwind was 11 kt, which would have helped to stabilize the aircraft during the approach.
The total landing distance was 1,571 m, which is 63% of the runway length. This is a relatively long landing distance, indicating that the pilot may have been a bit too far back from the optimal touchdown point. The runway rollout alignment was also misaligned by 19.9 m from the centreline, which suggests that the pilot may have had difficulty maintaining a straight course during the rollout.
Overall, while the landing was not perfect, it was still considered satisfactory. The pilot demonstrated good control of the aircraft during the approach and landing, but may have benefited from a more precise touchdown point and a more aligned runway touchdown position.
