MY FS FLIGHTS
Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,922 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,922 m of the 3,191 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,108 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at London Gatwick Airport, taking approximately 10 minutes and covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. Departure roll took place on runway 26L, with a takeoff distance of 385 meters, which is 15% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 149 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it encountered local weather conditions of a temperature of 13°C and winds of 6 knots at 200°. The crosswind was 5 knots, while the headwind was 3 knots. The enroute climb started overhead Charlwood in Surrey, England, and the aircraft ascended from 1,233 feet above sea level to 27,734 feet above sea level, an increase of 26,501 feet in 12 minutes, covering a distance of 52 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 7 miles north of Herne Bay in Kent, England, and lasted for 7 minutes, covering a distance of 55 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its descent from 28,181 feet above sea level to 12,812 feet above sea level, a decrease of 15,369 feet in 7 minutes, covering a distance of 51 nautical miles. This was followed by another enroute level cruise, which started 14 miles west of Ter Heijde in the Netherlands and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 10 nautical miles.
The enroute descent began 6 miles northwest of Kijkduin in the Netherlands, and the aircraft descended from 12,594 feet above sea level to 6,736 feet above sea level, a decrease of 5,858 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 21 nautical miles. Another enroute level cruise started overhead Zwaanshoek in the Netherlands and lasted for 3 minutes, covering a distance of 13 nautical miles. The final enroute descent began overhead Den Ilp in the Netherlands, and the aircraft descended from 6,721 feet above sea level to 1,838 feet above sea level, a decrease of 4,884 feet in 4 minutes, covering a distance of 8 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 24 at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol was made from the northeast, heading 238.0° at 3 nautical miles and 1,801 feet above ground level. However, a go-around was initiated at 217 feet above ground level. The aircraft then landed on runway 24, with a runway length of 3,191 meters. The threshold height was excessively over target, while the threshold speed was well above target at 155 knots.
The touchdown point was 685 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 131 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was excellent at -98 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.4 meters from the centerline. Local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 11°C and winds of 8 knots at 250°, with a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 8 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,835 meters, which is 58% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. Taxiing to the parking area from the runway took approximately 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 227 nautical miles, taking 68 minutes, and the aircraft used 2,271 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A320 aircraft successfully landed on runway 24 at EHAM Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, achieving an overall score of 81.0%. The final approach was initiated from the north-east, heading 238.0° at a distance of 3 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,801 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down 685 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is slightly off-center. The touchdown speed of 131 knots was a bit faster than the target speed, but the touchdown rate of -98 feet per minute (fpm) was excellent. The runway touchdown position was also slightly misaligned by 5.4 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 11°C and a wind speed of 8 knots from a direction of 250°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 8 knots. These conditions likely contributed to the slightly faster touchdown speed and the off-center touchdown point.
Despite these minor deviations, the aircraft's runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating a smooth and controlled deceleration after touchdown. The total landing distance of 1,835 meters was 58% of the available runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there is room for improvement in terms of touchdown speed and alignment. However, the excellent touchdown rate and good runway rollout alignment are positive indicators of the pilot's skill and the aircraft's performance.
