Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,317 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,317 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 274 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at SBFI Cataratas International Airport, a process that took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 33, with a takeoff distance of 1,480 meters, which accounted for 68% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 146 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions of 23°C temperature and a wind speed of 4 knots at 20°. The crosswind was 4 knots, while the headwind was 1 knot. After departing from the airport, the enroute climb started approximately 1 mile northwest of SBFI Cataratas International Airport, Foz do Iguaçu, in the state of Parana, Brazil. The aircraft climbed from an altitude of 1,784 feet above sea level to 37,888 feet above sea level, an increase of 36,104 feet, in 20 minutes and covering a distance of 128 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 16 miles north of SSPJ Fazenda Reserva Airport, Reserva Do Iguaçu, in the state of Parana, Brazil. This phase lasted for 49 minutes and covered a distance of 408 nautical miles. The enroute descent phase began 38 miles southeast of Ilhabela, in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The aircraft descended from an altitude of 37,948 feet above sea level to 278 feet above sea level, a decrease of 37,670 feet, in 21 minutes and covering a distance of 116 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 20L at SBRJ Santos Dumont Airport was made from the north, with a heading of 177.0° at 1 nautical mile and 264 feet above ground level. The aircraft landed on the runway, which had a length of 1,317 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 136 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 274 meters, but the touchdown speed of 133 knots was a little fast. The touchdown rate was hard at -460 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 30°C temperature and a wind speed of 12 knots at 159°. The crosswind was 4 knots, while the headwind was 12 knots. The total landing distance was 759 meters, which accounted for 58% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also very good. After landing, the aircraft taxiied to the parking area, a process that took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 655 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 100 minutes. The aircraft used 3,764 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed on runway 20L at SBRJ Santos Dumont Airport, achieving a high score of 96.7%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north, heading 177.0° at a distance of 1 nautical mile and an altitude of 264 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot maintained a good threshold height, which is a crucial aspect of a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was within the acceptable range at 136 knots. However, the touchdown speed of 133 knots was slightly faster than desired, which may have contributed to a harder touchdown rate. The touchdown rate of -460 feet per minute (fpm) was considered hard, indicating that the aircraft may have touched down with a bit too much force.
Despite the slightly fast touchdown speed, the aircraft's touchdown distance of 274 meters was within the acceptable range. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained a stable and aligned approach to the runway. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 30°C and a headwind of 12 knots, did not appear to significantly impact the landing.
The total landing distance of 759 meters was 58% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the pilot demonstrating good control and precision throughout the approach and touchdown phases.
