Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,205 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the full 5,205 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,937 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 6 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The Airbus A319 then departed from runway 18L at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (KCLT), with a takeoff distance of 3,679 feet, which was 42% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 144 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were favorable, with a temperature of 55°F and no wind. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile southeast of KCLT, rising from an altitude of 1,680 feet above sea level to 36,999 feet, an increase of 35,319 feet in 17 minutes, covering a distance of 108 nautical miles.
After reaching cruising altitude, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 4 miles northwest of Durham, North Carolina, and lasted for 16 minutes, covering a distance of 130 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 2 miles southeast of 69VA Meadow Farm Airport in Doswell, Virginia, descending from 36,471 feet to 1,286 feet in 28 minutes, covering a distance of 62 nautical miles.
The aircraft entered another level cruise phase, this time overhead Glassmanor, Maryland, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering less than 1 nautical mile. The final approach to runway 33 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (KDCA) was made from the southeast, with the aircraft heading 306.0° at 2 nautical miles and 1,004 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 33 was notable for being very long, with the aircraft using more than 50% of the available runway. The touchdown speed was a little fast at 128 knots, and the touchdown rate was heavy at -667 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was also misaligned by 35 feet from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were similar to those at departure, with a temperature of 43°F and no wind.
The total landing distance was 4,772 feet, which was 92% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 42 feet from the centerline. The total flight distance was 305 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 73 minutes. The aircraft used 5,567 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A319 aircraft attempted a landing on runway 33 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (KDCA), but the performance was not satisfactory. The final approach was initiated from the southeast, heading 306.0° at 2 nautical miles and 1,004 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on the runway, but the touchdown point was significantly long, utilizing more than 50% of the available runway length.
The threshold height at 99 feet agl was above the target, indicating that the aircraft was not properly configured for landing. Additionally, the threshold speed was well above the target at 135 knots, suggesting that the aircraft was not slowed down sufficiently before touchdown. The touchdown speed of 128 knots was also a little fast, and the touchdown rate was heavy at -667 feet per minute (fpm), which can be a concern for the safety of the aircraft and its occupants.
The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 35 feet from the centreline, which can be a challenge for the pilots to maintain control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 43°F and no wind, which should have made the landing easier. However, the pilots still struggled to achieve a smooth and controlled touchdown.
The total landing distance was 4,772 feet, which is 92% of the available runway length. This indicates that the aircraft had a significant amount of runway remaining after touchdown, but the pilots were unable to utilize it effectively. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 42 feet from the centreline, which can be a concern for the safety of the aircraft and its occupants.
Overall, the landing performance of the Airbus A319 aircraft on runway 33 at KDCA was not satisfactory, and the pilots need to work on improving their skills to achieve a smoother and more controlled touchdown.
