Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 10,247 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,384 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 16 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 36L at Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (LEMD). The takeoff distance was 5,074 feet, which accounted for 46% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 157 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 37°F, with a wind speed of 3 knots at 340°. The crosswind component was 1 knot, while the headwind component was 3 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 2 miles northwest of Paracuellos de Jarama, Spain, and ascended from 3,017 feet above sea level to 31,284 feet above sea level, a vertical increase of 28,267 feet, in 14 minutes and covering a distance of 65 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 2 miles southwest of Hoyocasero, Spain, and lasted for 32 minutes, covering a distance of 212 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 1 mile west of Comporta, Portugal, and descended from 31,196 feet above sea level to 20,456 feet above sea level, a vertical decrease of 10,741 feet, in 6 minutes and covering a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 3 miles west of Pista da Coudelaria Herdade do Pinheiro Setubal, Portugal, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 11 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its second enroute descent 6 miles southwest of Comporta, Portugal, and descended from 20,150 feet above sea level to 3,918 feet above sea level, a vertical decrease of 16,233 feet, in 12 minutes and covering a distance of 17 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 5 miles northwest of Sesimbra, Portugal, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its third enroute descent 1 mile west of Charneca de Caparica, Portugal, and descended from 3,551 feet above sea level to 1,621 feet above sea level, a vertical decrease of 1,930 feet, in 2 minutes and covering a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 02 at Lisbon Portela Airport (LPPT) was made from the south, with a heading of 23.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,266 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 02, which had a length of 10,247 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 137 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 1,380 feet, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 134 knots. The touchdown rate was fair at -254 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 14 feet from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 54°F, with a wind speed of 4 knots at 320°. The crosswind component was 4 knots, while the headwind component was 2 knots. The total landing distance was 3,180 feet, which accounted for 31% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 4 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at LPPT Humberto Delgado Airport (Lisbon Portela Airport) on runway 02, achieving a high score of 99.0%. The final approach was conducted from the south, with a heading of 23.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,266 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a good threshold height, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 137 knots. However, the touchdown speed of 134 knots was slightly faster than ideal, which may have contributed to a fair touchdown rate of -254 feet per minute (fpm). The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 14 feet from the centreline, which could have been a result of the crosswind or pilot error.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 54°F and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 320°. The crosswind component was 4 knots, while the headwind component was 2 knots. Despite these conditions, the aircraft was able to maintain a stable approach and landing.
The total landing distance of 3,180 feet was 31% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain a stable and controlled descent after touchdown. Overall, the landing was successful, and the aircraft was able to come to a stop within a safe distance from the end of the runway.
