Fixing the bounce
Fast at the threshold, normal flare, and the runway seems to refuse the aircraft. The instinctive fix - pushing it on - causes the next one. A fast aircraft forced onto the runway touches nosewheel-first or nearly so. The tell is a touchdown that feels soft followed by a bounce that steepens. Pilots fix the bounce recovery; the cause was the 10 knots at the threshold.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,651 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 107 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 23 at LFKA Albertville General Pierre Delachenal Airfield, a PA28 Arrow III aircraft. The takeoff distance was 417 meters, which is 60% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 76 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 1 knot from 270 degrees, resulting in a negligible crosswind and headwind.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb overhead Sainte-Helene-sur-Isere, reaching an altitude of 3,858 feet above sea level from an initial altitude of 1,209 feet. This climb of 2,649 feet was achieved in just 4 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles. The aircraft then leveled off and entered a cruise phase, which lasted for 2 minutes and covered 4 nautical miles, before starting its descent overhead Planaise.
The descent from 3,953 feet to 1,239 feet took 3 minutes and covered 7 nautical miles. The aircraft then leveled off again and entered another cruise phase, this time lasting 3 minutes and covering 4 nautical miles, before starting its final approach to runway 36 at LFLB Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc Airport. The approach was made from the south, heading 10.0 degrees, at an altitude of 411 feet above ground level and a distance of 2 nautical miles from the runway.
The landing on runway 36 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 105 meters, which is 30% of the runway length. The touchdown speed was slightly fast at 72 knots, and the touchdown rate was hard at -431 feet per minute. However, the threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 74 knots. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 6.3 meters.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking 2 minutes and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 25 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 16 minutes. The aircraft used a total of -97 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The PA28 Arrow III aircraft successfully landed at LFLB Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc Airport, achieving an overall score of 86.0%. The final approach to runway 36 was conducted from the south, with a heading of 10.0° at 2 nautical miles and 411 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft demonstrated good control and precision during the approach, ultimately landing safely on the runway.
The landing was characterized by a good threshold height, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct altitude as it approached the runway. The threshold speed of 74 knots was also within the acceptable range, suggesting that the pilot had maintained a steady and controlled approach. However, the touchdown speed of 72 knots was slightly faster than ideal, which may have contributed to a harder touchdown rate.
The touchdown rate of -431 feet per minute (fpm) was considered hard, indicating that the aircraft may have experienced a slight bounce or jolt upon touchdown. This could be attributed to the slightly fast touchdown speed. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.3 meters from the centerline, which may have affected the aircraft's rollout and alignment.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 16°C and a light wind of 1 knot from 270°. The crosswind component was minimal, at 1 knot, while the headwind component was zero. The total landing distance of 504 meters was within 30% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft had sufficient stopping distance.
During the rollout, the aircraft's alignment was slightly misaligned by 10.4 meters from the centerline, which may have been a result of the initial touchdown position. Overall, the landing was considered safe and successful, with the pilot demonstrating good control and precision throughout the approach and landing phases. However, there is room for improvement in terms of touchdown speed and touchdown rate to achieve a smoother and more controlled landing.
