Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,891 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 425 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A321, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at LOWW Vienna International Airport. This process took approximately 4 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 29, and the takeoff distance was 1,283 meters, which is 37% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 158 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 5°C, with a wind speed of 26 knots coming from a direction of 348°. This resulted in a crosswind of 21 knots and a headwind of 16 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile west of LOWW Vienna International Airport, rising from an altitude of 1,606 feet above sea level to 25,200 feet above sea level, an increase of 23,594 feet, in 13 minutes and covering a distance of 75 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started overhead Sankt Peter in der Au Markt, Austria, and lasted for 9 minutes, covering a distance of 67 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 2 miles east of Berchtesgaden, Germany, and descended from 25,156 feet above sea level to 3,628 feet above sea level, a decrease of 21,528 feet, in 14 minutes and covering a distance of 69 nautical miles.
The aircraft entered another level cruise phase, which started overhead Rum, Austria, and lasted for 4 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 08 at LOWI Innsbruck Airport was made from the west, with the aircraft heading 81.0° at an altitude of 700 feet above ground level and a distance of 2 nautical miles from the runway.
The landing took place on runway 08, which has a length of 1,891 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 139 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 427 meters, but the touchdown speed of 136 knots was slightly faster than desired. The touchdown rate was fair at -218 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.5 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 12°C, with a wind speed of 12 knots coming from a direction of 90°. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 12 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,070 meters, which is 57% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area from the runway, a process that took approximately 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 222 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 46 minutes. The aircraft used 2,270 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at Innsbruck Airport (LOWI) with a score of 98.2%. The aircraft approached the runway from the west, heading 81.0° at 2 nautical miles and 700 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with good control, and the aircraft landed safely on runway 08, which has a length of 1,891 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed was maintained at 139 knots, indicating a well-executed approach. The touchdown distance was also within acceptable limits at 427 meters. However, the touchdown speed of 136 knots was slightly higher than desired, which may have contributed to a fair touchdown rate of -218 feet per minute (fpm). This suggests that the aircraft may have touched down with a slightly higher rate of descent than intended.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 5.5 meters, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the approach or during the final stages of landing. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 12°C and a wind speed of 12 knots from a direction of 90°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 12 knots, which likely contributed to a smooth and stable approach.
The total landing distance was 1,070 meters, which represents 57% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the aircraft was well-controlled throughout the approach and landing phases. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the aircraft was well-aligned with the runway centerline during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was executed with a high degree of precision and control, resulting in a score of 98.2%.
