Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,756 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 404 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question was operated by an Airbus A321 aircraft. The pre-flight taxiing process from the parking area to the runway took approximately 9 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed from runway 04 at the LDZA Zagreb Franjo Tuđman International Airport, with a takeoff distance of 1,587 meters, which accounted for 49% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was recorded at 167 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 11 degrees Celsius and wind speeds of 6 knots at 40 degrees. The crosswind was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind was 6 knots. The enroute climb started over Velika Kosnica, a location in the Zagreb County, Croatia, and continued to an altitude of 35,044 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,685 feet in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 79 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started over Rukavac, a location in the Primorsko-Goranska Zupanija, Croatia. This phase lasted for 14 minutes and covered a distance of 99 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, initially from 34,584 feet above sea level to 33,898 feet above sea level, a decrease of 687 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 11 nautical miles.
The aircraft continued its descent and level cruise phases, with notable stops over Villadose, Villamarzana, Ficarolo, Portofino, and Recco, all located in Italy. The final descent phase started over Ficarolo, with the aircraft descending from 33,883 feet above sea level to 4,390 feet above sea level, a decrease of 29,493 feet in 18 minutes, covering a distance of 103 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it entered a level cruise phase, which started 1 mile south-east of Portofino, lasting for 2 minutes and covering a distance of 6 nautical miles. The final descent phase started 1 mile south-west of Recco, with the aircraft descending from 3,973 feet above sea level to 1,389 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,584 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 8 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 28 at the LIMJ Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport, coming in from the east at a heading of 288.0 degrees, 4 nautical miles from the runway and 1,363 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown speed of 122 knots and a touchdown distance of 406 meters. The touchdown rate was fair at -275 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 13 degrees Celsius and wind speeds of 14 knots at 210 degrees. The crosswind was 13 knots, while the headwind was 3 knots. The total landing distance was 1,366 meters, accounting for 50% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking approximately 3 minutes and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 324 nautical miles, with a total flight time of 72 minutes and a fuel consumption of 3,500 kilograms.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at LIMJ Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport, achieving a high score of 98.5%. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 288.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,363 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with precision, and the aircraft landed smoothly on runway 28, which has a length of 2,756 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed was maintained at 126 knots, indicating a well-executed approach. The touchdown distance of 406 meters was also within acceptable limits, and the touchdown speed of 122 knots was good. However, the touchdown rate of -275 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, suggesting that the aircraft could have been brought down to the ground more smoothly.
Despite the slightly high touchdown rate, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were moderate, with a temperature of 13°C and a wind speed of 14 knots from 210°. The crosswind component was 13 knots, while the headwind component was 3 knots, which may have contributed to the slightly high touchdown rate.
The total landing distance of 1,366 meters was 50% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was executed with precision and control, and the aircraft came to a stop safely on the runway.
