Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,948 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,948 m of the 3,312 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 451 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway at LOWW Vienna International Airport, taking approximately 5 minutes and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 29, with a takeoff distance of 1,549 meters, which accounted for 44% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 160 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions of 12°C temperature and a wind speed of 9 knots at 240°. The crosswind was 7 knots, while the headwind was 5 knots. After departing from LOWW, the enroute climb started approximately 1 mile west of the airport, with the aircraft ascending from 1,617 feet above sea level to 29,430 feet above sea level, an increase of 27,813 feet in 17 minutes, covering a distance of 101 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began overhead Eibiswald, Austria, and lasted for 14 minutes, covering 104 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent approximately 6 miles southeast of Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy, descending from 29,396 feet above sea level to 4,036 feet above sea level, a decrease of 25,360 feet in 11 minutes, covering a distance of 58 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise resumed approximately 1 mile northeast of Pettorazza Grimani, Italy, and lasted for 3 minutes, covering 13 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent approximately 2 miles east of Campagna Lupia, Italy, descending from 3,646 feet above sea level to 1,312 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,334 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 04R at LIPZ Venice Marco Polo Airport was made from the southwest, with a heading of 42.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,288 feet above ground level. The landing took place on runway 04R, which had a length of 3,312 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 144 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 450 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 138 knots. The touchdown rate was hard at -408 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at LIPZ were 19°C temperature and a wind speed of 7 knots at 220°, with a crosswind of 0 knots and a tailwind of 7 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,871 meters, accounting for 57% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took approximately 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 292 nautical miles, taking 58 minutes, and the aircraft used 3,126 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at LIPZ Venice Marco Polo Airport, achieving a score of 97.3%. The aircraft approached the runway from the southwest, heading 42.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,288 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with precision, and the aircraft landed safely on runway 04R, which has a length of 3,312 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 144 knots. However, the touchdown distance of 450 meters was considered good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown speed of 138 knots was a little fast, which may have contributed to the hard touchdown rate of -408 feet per minute (fpm). Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, demonstrating the pilot's skill and attention to detail.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 19°C and a gentle wind of 7 knots from 220°. The crosswind component was negligible, and the tailwind component was 7 knots, which may have contributed to the slightly fast touchdown speed. The total landing distance of 1,871 meters was 57% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing roll.
The runway rollout alignment was also very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the landing roll and was able to bring it to a stop in a safe and controlled manner. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft touching down safely and coming to a stop within a reasonable distance.
