Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,524 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 615 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 06 at 4N1 Greenwood Lake. The aircraft, a Cessna Skyhawk, accelerated down the runway and lifted off at a speed of 54 kt, covering 36% of the 375-meter runway. The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 16 °C and a gentle wind blowing at 2 kt from a direction of 110 °, resulting in a negligible crosswind and headwind.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead 4N1 Greenwood Lake West Milford. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 1,179 ft above sea level to 3,670 ft, an increase of 2,491 ft, in just 6 minutes. During this time, the aircraft covered a distance of 7 nm. The climb was followed by a level cruise, which began 1 mile north of Oakland, New Jersey, and lasted for 13 minutes, covering a distance of 22 nm.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent, which started overhead Chinatown, New York. The descent took the aircraft from an altitude of 3,625 ft above sea level to 381 ft, a decrease of 3,245 ft, in just 5 minutes. During this time, the aircraft covered a distance of 8 nm. The final approach to landing was made at Brooklyn CGAS, with the aircraft descending from 378 ft above ground level to 1 nm from the runway threshold.
However, the pilot decided to execute a go-around at 255 ft above ground level, and then again at 6 ft above ground level. After the second go-around, the pilot successfully lined up for a final approach and touched down at Brooklyn CGAS at a speed of 56 kt. The touchdown rate was fair at -266 fpm, and the touchdown point was 216 m beyond the touchdown zone.
Following the touchdown, the aircraft began its landing rollout, covering a distance of 273 m. The pilot then taxied the aircraft to the parking area, a process that took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nm. The total flight distance was 41 nm, and the flight duration was 31 minutes. The aircraft used 15 kg of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna Skyhawk aircraft successfully landed at Brooklyn CGAS, achieving a score of 66.2%. The final approach to landing was conducted from 1 nm to 1 nm at an altitude of 378 ft above ground level (agl). The aircraft demonstrated a stable descent, with two notable instances of altitude reduction.
The first instance showed a descent from 26 ft agl to 0 ft agl in just 3 seconds, indicating a steep rate of descent. However, the second instance was more controlled, with a descent from 44 ft agl to 0 ft agl in 15 seconds. This suggests that the pilot was able to adjust their descent rate to achieve a more stable approach.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was recorded at 56 kt, which was considered good. The touchdown rate, however, was fair at -266 fpm. This indicates that the aircraft touched down with a moderate rate of descent, which may have been influenced by the wind conditions.
The touchdown point was located 216 m beyond the designated touchdown zone, which may have been due to the wind conditions. The local weather at the time of landing was characterized by a temperature of 17 °C and a wind speed of 2 kt at 110 °. The crosswind and tailwind components were both 1 kt, which suggests that the wind was relatively light and not significantly affecting the aircraft's approach.
During the landing rollout, the aircraft maintained an altitude of 0 ft above sea level (asl) and traveled a distance of 273 m. Overall, the landing was considered successful, despite some minor deviations from the ideal approach and touchdown.
