Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 5,004 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 834 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with taxiing from the parking area to the runway at KCOI Merritt Island Airport, which took approximately 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The Piper Aerostar 600 aircraft, registered as NI22PC, then took off from runway 29, with an initial liftoff speed of 94 knots.
During the takeoff, the aircraft experienced a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 7 knots, in addition to a local temperature of 84°F. The aircraft's takeoff distance covered 1,405 feet of the runway, which accounted for 39% of its total length.
After takeoff, the aircraft began its enroute climb phase from 545 feet above sea level to 8,483 feet above sea level, a gain of 7,938 feet, covering 15 nautical miles in 7 minutes. Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase for 14 minutes over 1 mile south of Titusville, covering 49 nautical miles.
The aircraft then climbed to a higher altitude from 8,257 feet above sea level to 9,304 feet above sea level in 2 minutes, covering 6 nautical miles. This was followed by another prolonged level cruise phase, which lasted for 216 minutes from overhead Flagler Beach and covered a distance of 843 nautical miles.
As the aircraft neared its destination, it began its descent from 5 miles north of Oxoboxo River in Connecticut, descending from 8,786 feet above sea level to 1,874 feet above sea level in 11 minutes, covering a distance of 39 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered the right-hand pattern for runway 23 at KSFZ North Central State Airport, covering less than 1 nautical mile in 13 seconds.
The aircraft completed the pattern turn on the downwind leg, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile at an angle of 45 degrees and a turn of 134.8 degrees. It then continued to the base leg, covering another 1 nautical mile at an angle of 45 degrees and a turn of 0.0 degrees.
The aircraft proceeded to the finals, with the final approach speed maintained at 90 knots and a threshold height that was good. The aircraft landed smoothly on runway 23, with a touchdown distance of 823 feet, a touchdown speed of 73 knots, and a touchdown rate of -56 feet per minute. Runway touchdown alignment was excellent, and the local weather conditions were mild, with a temperature of 81°F and a headwind of 13 knots.
The entire landing process covered 1,542 feet of the runway, accounting for 31% of its total length. Furthermore, the runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft had landed smoothly. The final taxiing process from the runway took approximately 2 minutes to cover less than 1 nautical mile, effectively concluding the flight.
In total, the flight covered a distance of 955 nautical miles, utilized 258 minutes of flight time, and consumed 800 pounds of fuel. The successful execution of the flight reflects the capabilities of the Piper Aerostar 600 and its skilled pilots.
The aircraft, a Piper Aerostar 600 with the registration NI22PC, successfully landed on runway 23 at KSFZ North Central State Airport. The final approach was executed from the north east, aligning with the runway at a heading of 210.0°, approximately 1 nautical mile from the airport at an altitude of 197 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot demonstrated precision during the approach and landing, achieving a high score of 98.8%.
Upon landing, the pilot managed to maintain a good threshold height, indicating that the aircraft touched down smoothly and at a safe distance from the beginning of the runway. The threshold speed of 90 knots was also within the acceptable range, demonstrating the pilot's ability to control the aircraft's descent and velocity. Following touchdown, the aircraft remained aligned with the runway, with a touchdown distance of 823 feet, which is considered adequate for a runway of 5,004 feet in length.
The weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 81°F and a moderate wind of 14 knots from a direction of 199°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 knots, and the headwind component was 13 knots, which assisted the aircraft's descent and rollout. The total landing distance of 1,542 feet, accounting for 31% of the runway length, is within the expected range for an aircraft of the Piper Aerostar 600's size and capabilities.
The post-landing performance was equally impressive, with the aircraft maintaining perfect rollout alignment. The high scores and excellent performance demonstrate the pilot's skill and expertise in handling the aircraft during a variety of flight maneuvers and conditions. Overall, the landing of the Piper Aerostar 600 with the registration NI22PC at KSFZ North Central State Airport was a textbook example of safe and efficient flight operations.
