Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,515 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,515 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 438 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a short taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, taking approximately 1 minute and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Cessna 208B, then departed from runway 27 at Merle K (Mudhole) Smith Airport, located in Cordova, Alaska. The takeoff distance was 640 meters, which accounted for 28% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 76 knots.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb 2 miles west of Merle K (Mudhole) Smith Airport. The climb started at an altitude of 1,055 feet above sea level and reached 6,670 feet above sea level, an increase of 5,615 feet, in just 5 minutes. During this time, the aircraft covered a distance of 8 nautical miles.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 6 miles southeast of Merle K (Mudhole) Smith Airport. This phase lasted for 71 minutes and covered a distance of 162 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 19 miles west of Yakutat, Alaska, and descended from 6,661 feet above sea level to 2,452 feet above sea level, a decrease of 4,210 feet, in 5 minutes. The aircraft covered a distance of 12 nautical miles during this descent.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 13 miles southwest of Yakutat Airport. This phase lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent 9 miles southwest of Yakutat Airport and descended from 2,500 feet above sea level to 1,267 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,234 feet, in 3 minutes. The aircraft covered a distance of 5 nautical miles during this descent.
The final approach to runway 02 at Yakutat Airport was made from the southwest, with a heading of 46.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,245 feet above ground level. The aircraft landed on the runway, which had a length of 1,515 meters. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was excessively high at 92 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 438 meters, but the touchdown speed was too fast at 80 knots. The touchdown rate was excellent at -97 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.9 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 8 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 6 knots at 10 degrees. The crosswind was 3 knots, and the headwind was 5 knots. The total landing distance was 840 meters, which accounted for 55% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking approximately 2 minutes and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 198 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 90 minutes. The aircraft used 337 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna 208B aircraft successfully landed at Yakutat Airport, with a score of 91.9%. The final approach was initiated from the southwest, heading 46.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,245 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 02, which has a length of 1,515 meters.
The threshold height was reported as good, but the threshold speed was excessively high at 92 knots. This indicates that the pilot may have been able to make adjustments to reduce the speed before touchdown. The touchdown distance was good, measuring 438 meters, which is a reasonable distance for a Cessna 208B. However, the touchdown speed was too fast at 80 knots, which may have contributed to the slightly misaligned runway touchdown position.
The touchdown rate was excellent, at -97 feet per minute (fpm), indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.9 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to the high touchdown speed. The local weather conditions were relatively calm, with a temperature of 8°C, wind at 6 knots from 10°, and a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 5 knots.
The total landing distance was 840 meters, which is 55% of the runway length. This is a reasonable distance, considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was successful, but there are areas for improvement, such as reducing the threshold speed and touchdown speed.
