Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 9,316 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 3,265 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Cessna CJ4 Citation, then departed from runway 21 at KFOE Topeka Regional Airport. The takeoff distance was 2,023 feet, which accounted for 29% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 137 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 93°F and a wind speed of 7 knots at 199 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 6 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 2 miles north of Wakarusa, Kansas. The climb took 9 minutes and covered 40 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 2,065 feet above sea level to 20,961 feet above sea level, an increase of 18,896 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 2 miles southwest of Hartford, Kansas. This phase lasted for 39 minutes and covered 259 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 4 miles southwest of Lake Murray State Park Airport Overbrook, Oklahoma. The descent took 14 minutes and covered 65 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 20,968 feet above sea level to 1,823 feet above sea level, a decrease of 19,145 feet.
The final approach to runway 13R at KDFW Dallas Fort Worth International Airport was made from the northwest, heading 139.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,251 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 13R, which had a length of 9,316 feet. The threshold height at 62 feet above ground level was above the target, and the threshold speed was excessively high at 137 knots.
The touchdown point was 1,883 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 114 knots, which was too fast. However, the touchdown rate was smooth at -120 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 33 feet from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 89°F and a wind speed of 17 knots at 170 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 9 knots and a headwind of 15 knots.
The total landing distance was 4,671 feet, which accounted for 50% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 33 feet from the centreline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 373 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 73 minutes. The aircraft used 2,384 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna CJ4 Citation aircraft successfully landed on runway 13R at KDFW Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, but the landing was not without its issues. The aircraft's final approach was from the northwest, heading 139.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,251 feet above ground level (agl). The landing was scored at 76.1%, indicating a decent performance but room for improvement.
One of the notable issues during the landing was the threshold height, which was above the target height at 62 feet agl. This could have been a concern for the pilots, as it may have affected the aircraft's approach path and touchdown point. Additionally, the threshold speed was excessively high at 137 knots, which is above the recommended speed for a safe landing.
The touchdown point was 1,883 feet beyond the touchdown zone, indicating that the aircraft landed farther down the runway than intended. The touchdown speed of 114 knots was also too fast, which could have put additional stress on the aircraft's landing gear and brakes. However, the touchdown rate was smooth at -120 feet per minute (fpm), which is a positive aspect of the landing.
The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 33 feet from the centreline, which could have made the landing more challenging for the pilots. The local weather conditions were also a factor, with a temperature of 89°F and winds of 17 knots at 170°. The crosswind was 9 knots, and the headwind was 15 knots, which may have affected the aircraft's approach and landing.
The total landing distance was 4,671 feet, which is 50% of the runway length. This is a relatively long landing distance, indicating that the aircraft may have been slowed down more than necessary during the approach. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 33 feet from the centreline, which could have made the landing more challenging for the pilots.
Overall, while the Cessna CJ4 Citation aircraft successfully landed on runway 13R at KDFW Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, there were several issues that need to be addressed to improve the landing performance. These include reducing the threshold speed, improving the touchdown point accuracy, and reducing the touchdown speed.
