Improve the rollout
A crosswind landing is a geometry problem. The air mass you're flying in is moving sideways across the runway, and you need your ground track down the centreline with your wheels aligned to it at the moment of contact. There are two techniques that will help, the crab and the sideslip.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,305 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,305 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 372 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with taxiing from the parking area to the runway, which took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a P180, then departed from runway 24 at Edinburgh Airport (EGPH), with a takeoff distance of 702 meters, which was 33% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 126 knots.
As the aircraft climbed, it encountered local weather conditions of 12°C temperature and a wind speed of 26 knots at 230°. The crosswind was 4 knots, and the headwind was 26 knots. The enroute climb started overhead Ratho Station, where the aircraft climbed from 1,153 feet above sea level to 14,365 feet, an increase of 13,212 feet in 6 minutes, covering a distance of 10 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered a level cruise phase, starting overhead Blairhall, which lasted 4 minutes and covered 18 nautical miles. The next climb phase started 1 mile north of Forgandenny, where the aircraft climbed from 15,199 feet to 20,088 feet, an increase of 4,889 feet in 4 minutes, covering 23 nautical miles.
The aircraft continued to climb, starting 2 miles west of Kirriemuir, where it climbed from 20,199 feet to 29,348 feet, an increase of 9,149 feet in 7 minutes, covering 25 nautical miles. The next level cruise phase started 1 mile east of Aboyne, which lasted 2 minutes and covered 1 nautical mile.
The aircraft then entered another climb phase, starting 1 mile south west of Lumphanan, where it climbed from 30,021 feet to 31,188 feet, an increase of 1,166 feet in 2 minutes, covering 11 nautical miles. The next level cruise phase started 2 miles east of Insch, which lasted 9 minutes and covered 70 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent, starting 41 miles north of Sandhaven, where it descended from 31,176 feet to 27,193 feet, a decrease of 3,983 feet in 2 minutes, covering 18 nautical miles. The next level cruise phase started 43 miles east of Lamb Holme, which lasted 2 minutes and covered 18 nautical miles.
The aircraft then continued its descent, starting 33 miles south of Fair Isle Airport, where it descended from 26,501 feet to 2,495 feet, a decrease of 24,006 feet in 11 minutes, covering 61 nautical miles. The next level cruise phase started 10 miles east of Sandwick, which lasted 5 minutes and covered 9 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 27 at Sumburgh Airport (EGPB) was made from the east, with a heading of 261.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,291 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown speed of 115 knots and a touchdown distance of 372 meters. However, the runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned by 16.0 meters from the centreline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 9°C temperature and a wind speed of 25 knots at 220°, with a crosswind of 17 knots and a headwind of 18 knots. The total landing distance was 624 meters, which was 48% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 14.2 meters from the centreline.
The taxiing from the runway to the parking area took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 271 nautical miles, which took 60 minutes, and the
The aircraft, FFX P180 03 01, successfully landed at EGPB Sumburgh Airport, achieving a score of 91.4%. The final approach to runway 27 was initiated from the east, with a heading of 261.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,291 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on the runway, which has a length of 1,305 meters.
The threshold height was reported as good, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 128 knots. However, the touchdown distance of 372 meters was considered good, and the touchdown speed of 115 knots was also within acceptable limits. The touchdown rate of -283 feet per minute (fpm) was fair, indicating a slightly steeper descent than desired.
The landing was conducted in challenging weather conditions, with a temperature of 9°C and a wind speed of 25 knots from a direction of 220°. The crosswind component was 17 knots, while the headwind component was 18 knots. Despite these conditions, the aircraft was able to maintain control and land safely.
However, there were some issues with the alignment of the aircraft during the landing. The runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned by 16.0 meters from the centerline, and the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 14.2 meters from the centerline. These misalignments may have been due to the challenging wind conditions and the pilot's response to them.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, but there is room for improvement in terms of alignment and touchdown rate. The pilot's ability to maintain control and land safely in challenging weather conditions is a testament to their skill and experience.
