Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 9,392 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,625 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question began with taxiing from the parking to the runway at San Francisco International Airport, taking 11 minutes and covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 01R, with a takeoff distance of 5,534 feet, which was 67% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 162 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of San Francisco International Airport, it began its enroute climb, reaching an altitude of 16,993 feet above sea level in 13 minutes, covering a distance of 42 nautical miles. The climb started 1 mile northeast of the airport and ended 2 miles northeast of Day Valley, California. The aircraft then leveled off and cruised for 4 minutes, covering 31 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another enroute climb, this time from 16,992 feet to 32,912 feet above sea level, an increase of 15,919 feet in 14 minutes, covering 111 nautical miles. This climb started 4 miles south of Tres Pinos, California, and ended 4 miles southwest of Wasco Airport in Wasco, California. The aircraft then leveled off and cruised for 2 minutes, covering 18 nautical miles.
The aircraft continued its enroute climb, reaching an altitude of 34,257 feet above sea level in 2 minutes, covering 18 nautical miles. This climb started 6 miles southwest of Rosedale, California, and ended 5 miles south of Creekside Airport in Arvin, California. The aircraft then leveled off and cruised for 113 minutes, covering 1,015 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent, starting 6 miles northwest of Harper Airport in Palmer, Texas. The descent from 34,443 feet to 24,206 feet above sea level took 9 minutes, covering 78 nautical miles. The aircraft then leveled off and cruised for 4 minutes, covering 31 nautical miles.
The aircraft continued its enroute descent, starting 4 miles south of Buckholts, Texas. The descent from 23,990 feet to 8,014 feet above sea level took 16 minutes, covering 74 nautical miles. The aircraft then leveled off and cruised for 18 minutes, covering 55 nautical miles.
The aircraft began another enroute descent, starting 4 miles south of Liberty, Texas. The descent from 8,002 feet to 3,003 feet above sea level took 7 minutes, covering 12 nautical miles. The aircraft then leveled off and cruised for 58 minutes, covering 25 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its final destination, it began its final descent, starting 4 miles south of David Wayne Hooks Memorial Airport in Houston, Texas. The descent from 1,998 feet to 1,345 feet above sea level took 2 minutes, covering 5 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 08R at George Bush Intercontinental Houston Airport, flying from the west at a heading of 90.0 degrees and 4 nautical miles from the runway. The aircraft landed on the runway, with a touchdown point 201 feet beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 130 knots, which was good, but the touchdown rate was fair at -262 feet per minute.
The aircraft then taxied to the parking area, taking 1 minute and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,523 nautical miles, taking 250 minutes, and the aircraft used 21,697 pounds of fuel.
The aircraft, identified as an A21N, successfully landed at KIAH George Bush Intercontinental Houston Airport on runway 08R. The final approach was initiated from the west, heading 90.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,243 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft demonstrated a high level of proficiency, achieving a score of 96.8%.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down at a speed of 130 knots, which was within the acceptable threshold speed of 133 knots. The touchdown point was located 201 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating a slight deviation from the intended landing spot. However, the touchdown rate of -262 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair, suggesting that the aircraft could have maintained a more controlled descent.
The landing distance of 3,784 feet was 40% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. This indicates that the pilot executed a smooth and controlled approach, allowing the aircraft to touch down and come to a stop within a relatively short distance.
During the rollout, the aircraft's alignment was slightly misaligned from the centreline by 27 feet, which is a minor deviation. This suggests that the pilot may have experienced some difficulty in maintaining a straight course during the rollout phase.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 59°F and no wind. This made the landing process even smoother and more predictable. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft demonstrating a high level of proficiency and control throughout the approach and landing phases.
