Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 152 m above the runway. The 305 m gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,662 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 575 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at YBCG Gold Coast Airport, a process that took 7 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 32, with a takeoff distance of 1,705 meters, which accounted for 83% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 162 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it started its enroute climb overhead Tugun, located in the State of Queensland, Australia. The climb took 21 minutes, during which the aircraft ascended from 195 meters above sea level to 11,451 meters above sea level, an increase of 11,255.1 meters. The aircraft covered a distance of 103 nautical miles during this climb.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 12 miles north-east of Deepwater, located in the State of New South Wales, Australia. This phase lasted for 66 minutes and covered a distance of 470 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent, starting 8 miles west of Urana, also located in the State of New South Wales, Australia. The descent took 22 minutes, during which the aircraft decreased its altitude from 11,587 meters above sea level to 2,744 meters above sea level, a decrease of 8,843.6 meters. The aircraft covered a distance of 136 nautical miles during this descent.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 2 miles east of YRSY Romsey Airport, located in the State of Victoria, Australia. This phase lasted for only 3 minutes and covered a distance of 16 nautical miles.
The final descent phase began 2 miles south of Diggers Rest, also located in the State of Victoria, Australia. The descent took 6 minutes, during which the aircraft decreased its altitude from 2,706 meters above sea level to 524 meters above sea level, a decrease of 2,181.5 meters. The aircraft covered a distance of 8 nautical miles during this descent.
The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 34 at YMML Melbourne International Airport, approaching from the south at a heading of 352.0 degrees and at an altitude of 401.4 meters above ground level. The aircraft landed on the runway, with a touchdown point 154 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 131 knots, which was considered good, and the touchdown rate was firm at -1.8 meters per second.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.4 meters from the centerline. The total landing distance was 1,219 meters, which accounted for 33% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxiied to the parking area, a process that took 6 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 740 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 131 minutes. The aircraft used 4,297 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 aircraft successfully landed at Melbourne International Airport (YMML) on runway 34, achieving a high score of 90.9%. The final approach was conducted from the south, heading 352.0° at an altitude of 401.4 meters above ground level (agl) and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down at a speed of 131 knots, which was within the acceptable threshold speed of 134 knots. The touchdown point was located 154 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating a slight deviation from the intended landing spot. However, the touchdown rate of -1.8 meters per second was firm, suggesting a controlled descent.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.4 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to factors such as wind or pilot error. Nevertheless, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain a stable and controlled path after touchdown.
The total landing distance of 1,219 meters was 33% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. This suggests that the pilots were able to execute a smooth and efficient landing, taking into account the aircraft's performance and the runway conditions.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15°C, which is relatively mild and may have contributed to the smooth landing. Overall, the landing was successful, and the aircraft was able to come to a stop within a reasonable distance from the runway threshold.
