Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,742 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,742 m of the 3,988 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 634 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The Airbus A321 then departed from runway 02 at LPPT Humberto Delgado Airport, also known as Lisbon Portela Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,948 meters, which accounted for 62% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 175 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 14 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 18 knots from a direction of 350 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 10 knots and a headwind of 15 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead Camarate, a location in the Distrito de Lisboa, Portugal. During this phase, the aircraft climbed from an altitude of 1,339 feet above sea level to 30,724 feet above sea level, an increase of 29,385 feet in 16 minutes, covering a distance of 135 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise phase started 1 mile west of Canaveral, a location in Extremadura, Spain, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 45 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 1 mile northwest of El Gordo, also in Extremadura, Spain. During this phase, the aircraft descended from an altitude of 30,768 feet above sea level to 3,884 feet above sea level, a decrease of 26,884 feet in 14 minutes, covering a distance of 94 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another enroute level cruise phase, starting 2 miles northwest of Perales de Tajuna, a location in the Comunidad de Madrid, Spain. This phase lasted for 4 minutes, covering a distance of 10 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 32L at LEMD Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport was made from the southeast, heading 323.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,258 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 32L was made at a speed of 154 knots, which was well above the target speed. The touchdown point was 217 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 148 knots, which was fast. The touchdown rate was also hard at -443 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, but the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 11.2 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 7 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 16 knots from a direction of 350 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 7 knots and a headwind of 14 knots. The total landing distance was 1,660 meters, which accounted for 42% of the runway. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area, a process that took 5 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 292 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 48 minutes. The aircraft used 2,901 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed on runway 32L at LEMD Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport, but with some notable deviations from the ideal landing parameters. The final approach was initiated from the southeast, heading 323.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,258 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft touched down 217 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation. The touchdown speed of 148 knots was also faster than the target speed, indicating that the pilot may have applied the brakes too late or not enough. Furthermore, the touchdown rate of -443 feet per minute (fpm) was considered hard, suggesting that the aircraft may have experienced a significant deceleration upon touchdown.
Despite these deviations, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot maintained a stable and aligned approach to the runway. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 7°C, with a wind speed of 16 knots from 350°. The crosswind component was relatively low at 7 knots, while the headwind component was 14 knots, which may have contributed to the aircraft's faster touchdown speed.
The total landing distance of 1,660 meters was 42% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 11.2 meters from the centerline, indicating that the pilot may have experienced some difficulty in maintaining a straight course during the rollout phase.
Overall, while the landing was successful, there were some notable deviations from the ideal landing parameters, which may indicate the need for further training or adjustments to the pilot's technique.
