Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,636 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 740 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A319 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Eugene F. Kranz Toledo Express Airport, taking approximately 8 minutes and covering a distance of 4 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 07, with a takeoff distance of 1,481 meters, which accounted for 46% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 161 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it encountered local weather conditions of -0°C temperature and a wind speed of 0 knots at 180 degrees. The enroute climb started overhead the airport, with the aircraft ascending from 1,699 feet above sea level to 23,193 feet above sea level, an increase of 21,495 feet in 8 minutes and covering a distance of 23 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 2 miles north of Fayette, Ohio, and lasted for 14 minutes, covering a distance of 75 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent 3 miles north of Elkhart Municipal Airport, Indiana, and descended from 22,854 feet above sea level to 11,393 feet above sea level, a decrease of 11,460 feet in 7 minutes and covering a distance of 34 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, this time starting 2 miles northwest of La Porte, Indiana, and lasting for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 8 nautical miles. The enroute descent began again 2 miles northwest of Orthodontic Strip Westville, Indiana, and the aircraft descended from 10,948 feet above sea level to 1,833 feet above sea level, a decrease of 9,115 feet in 8 minutes and covering a distance of 27 nautical miles.
The final level cruise phase took place 2 miles northeast of Burnham, Illinois, and lasted for 5 minutes, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 12 at Gary Chicago International Airport, heading 124.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 981 feet above ground level.
The landing took place on runway 12, with a runway length of 1,636 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 130 knots. The touchdown point was 316 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 120 knots and a touchdown rate of -185 feet per minute, which was considered good. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.3 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were -3°C temperature and a wind speed of 7 knots at 160 degrees, with a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 6 knots. The total landing distance was 1,334 meters, which accounted for 82% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
The taxiing from the runway to the parking area took approximately 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 177 nautical miles, taking a total of 56 minutes, and the aircraft used 2,094 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A319 successfully landed at Gary Chicago International Airport (KGYY) with a score of 90.7%. The aircraft approached the runway from the northwest, heading 124.0° at 4 nautical miles and 981 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with good control, and the aircraft landed on runway 12, which has a length of 1,636 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed was maintained at 130 knots, indicating a well-executed approach. The touchdown point was 316 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is slightly longer than ideal but still within acceptable limits. The touchdown speed of 120 knots was also good, and the touchdown rate of -185 feet per minute (fpm) was within the desired range.
However, there was a slight misalignment of the runway touchdown position, with the aircraft being 3.3 meters off the centerline. This may be attributed to the crosswind component of 4 knots, which was present during the landing. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of -3°C and a wind speed of 7 knots at 160°, also played a role in the landing.
Despite the slight misalignment, the total landing distance of 1,334 meters was 82% of the runway length, which is a good indication of the aircraft's performance. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot demonstrated good control and decision-making skills. However, there is room for improvement in terms of maintaining a more precise alignment with the runway centerline.
