Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,469 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,469 m of the 4,014 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,376 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Zürich Airport (LSZH), the Boeing 777-300 began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. As the aircraft lined up on runway 16, the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 8°C, a wind speed of 4 knots at 139°, resulting in a 1-knot crosswind and a 4-knot headwind.
After a successful departure roll, the aircraft initiated its enroute climb, starting from an altitude of 2,355 feet above sea level (asl) and gradually increasing to 26,453 ft asl over a distance of 90 nautical miles in 15 minutes. The climb phase was followed by a prolonged level cruise, which lasted for 807 minutes and covered a significant distance of 6,146 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another climb phase, this time from 27,512 ft asl to 30,627 ft asl, an increase of 3,114 ft in just 2 minutes, covering a short distance of 13 nautical miles. The subsequent level cruise phase was brief, lasting only 2 minutes and covering 12 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, Narita International Airport (RJAA), it initiated its descent phase, gradually decreasing from 31,181 ft asl to 22,015 ft asl over a distance of 54 nautical miles in 8 minutes. The final approach to runway 16R was executed from the north-west, with the aircraft aligning perfectly with the runway. The landing was successful, with the touchdown point located 906 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The total landing distance was 2,334 meters, accounting for 56% of the runway length. Following the landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, a process that took 4 minutes and covered a short distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 6,397 nautical miles, with a total flight time of 791 minutes and a fuel consumption of 110,633 kilograms.
The Boeing 777-300 touched down on runway 16R at RJAA Narita International Airport, marking a satisfactory conclusion to the approach from the north west. The aircraft's descent was characterized by a slightly above-target threshold speed of 147 kt, which was achieved at an altitude of 80 ft agl, well above the target height. The approach quality was otherwise unremarkable, with the aircraft maintaining a steady heading of 150.0° at 4 nm from the runway.
As the aircraft made contact with the runway, it did so at a speed of 123 kt, which was within acceptable limits. However, the touchdown rate of -202 fpm was somewhat higher than desired, indicating a slightly longer than ideal deceleration. Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, with the aircraft centered on the runway's centerline. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 13 °C and a gentle headwind of 5 kt, contributed to a relatively smooth landing.
The Boeing 777-300's rollout was characterized by perfect alignment with the runway centerline, demonstrating excellent control and coordination from the flight crew. The total landing distance of 2,334 m, which accounted for 56% of the runway's length, was within acceptable limits. Overall, the landing was deemed satisfactory, earning a score of 85.3%. While there were some minor deviations from ideal performance, the flight crew's skills and the aircraft's capabilities ensured a safe and controlled conclusion to the approach.
