Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: speed above the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,992 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 307 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-700, then departed from runway 29 at UIAA Chita-Kadala International Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,065 meters, which accounted for 38% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 151 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of -22 °C, with a wind speed of 2 knots at 269 degrees. The crosswind was negligible, but there was a headwind of 2 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of UIAA Chita-Kadala International Airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead the airport. The climb took 42 minutes and covered a distance of 311 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 3,336 feet above sea level to 39,173 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,836 feet. The enroute level cruise then began 47 miles north of Yakeshi, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China, and lasted for 113 minutes, covering a distance of 879 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 15 miles southeast of RJER Rishiri Airport, Rishiri, Hokkaido, Japan, and took 24 minutes to complete, during which the aircraft descended from 38,692 feet above sea level to 1,523 feet above sea level, a decrease of 37,169 feet. The descent covered a distance of 172 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 08 at RJCN Nakashibetsu Airport was made from the west, with a heading of 71.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,285 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 08 at RJCN Nakashibetsu Airport was successful, with a touchdown distance of 305 meters, which was 39% of the runway length. The touchdown speed was 119 knots, and the touchdown rate was fair at -269 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -3 °C, with a wind speed of 2 knots at 193 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, and there was a tailwind of 1 knot.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,369 nautical miles, and the total flight time was 186 minutes. The aircraft used 8,057 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-700 aircraft successfully landed at RJCN Nakashibetsu Airport, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in its approach and landing procedures. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the west, heading 71.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,285 feet above ground level (agl).
The pilot's final approach was executed with precision, resulting in a 99.5% score. The aircraft landed on runway 08, which has a length of 1,992 meters. The threshold height was good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct altitude as it approached the runway. The threshold speed of 126 knots was also within the acceptable range, demonstrating the pilot's ability to manage the aircraft's speed during the approach.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's performance was satisfactory, with a touchdown distance of 305 meters and a touchdown speed of 119 knots. However, the touchdown rate of -269 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, suggesting that the pilot could have managed the descent more smoothly. Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were characterized by a temperature of -3°C and a wind speed of 2 knots from 193°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the tailwind component was 1 knot. These conditions did not appear to have significantly impacted the aircraft's performance during the landing.
The total landing distance of 771 meters was 39% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This suggests that the pilot was able to manage the aircraft's speed and descent rate effectively, resulting in a smooth and controlled landing. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the Boeing 737-700's landing at RJCN Nakashibetsu Airport was a successful and well-executed procedure, demonstrating the pilot's skill and proficiency in managing the aircraft during the approach and landing phases.
