Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,579 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,579 m of the 3,216 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 496 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 12 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 12 at LIPE Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,154 meters, which accounted for 54% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 152 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 12 knots at a direction of 70 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 8 knots and a headwind of 8 knots. The aircraft climbed to a height of 34,242 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,120 feet from the initial altitude of 1,122 feet. This climb took 25 minutes and covered a distance of 153 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 1 mile north west of Trins, a location in the Tirol region of Austria. This phase of the flight lasted for 45 minutes and covered a distance of 311 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent 2 miles south east of Bulstringen, a location in the Saxony-Anhalt region of Germany. The descent took 18 minutes and covered a distance of 91 nautical miles, during which the aircraft decreased in altitude from 34,278 feet to 1,336 feet.
The final approach to runway 33 at EDDH Hamburg Helmut Schmidt Airport was made from the south east, with the aircraft heading at 332.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,287 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with the touchdown point being 80 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was slightly above the target speed at 142 knots, but the touchdown rate was good at -190 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 6 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 7 knots at a direction of 330 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 0 knots and a headwind of 7 knots. The total landing distance was 1,498 meters, which accounted for 47% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 5 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 565 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 102 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 5,100 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at EDDH Hamburg Helmut Schmidt Airport, achieving a high score of 99.4%. The aircraft approached the runway from the south east, heading 332.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,287 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with precision, and the aircraft landed safely on runway 33, which has a length of 3,216 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 142 knots. However, this minor deviation did not significantly impact the overall performance of the landing. The touchdown point was 80 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. The touchdown speed of 139 knots was a bit faster than the ideal speed, but the touchdown rate of -190 feet per minute (fpm) was good, indicating a controlled descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 6°C and a gentle headwind of 7 knots from a direction of 330°. The crosswind component was negligible, at 0 knots. The total landing distance of 1,498 meters was 47% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight.
The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft's brakes were applied smoothly and effectively, allowing the aircraft to come to a stop in a straight line. Overall, the landing was executed with precision and control, and the aircraft came to a stop safely on the runway.
