Work on the flare
See Arrival Landing
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: off the centreline.
At the 500 ft gate: off the centreline.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,405 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,405 m of the 3,077 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 631 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
A Boeing 777-300 took off from runway 19 at Cape Town International Airport. The takeoff roll took less than 4 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 166 knots, having used 31% of the runway. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 20°C, with a gentle headwind of 8 knots and a crosswind of 2 knots.
Following a smooth takeoff, the aircraft began its initial enroute climb, reaching an altitude of 35,347 feet above sea level. This involved ascending by a height of 34,195 feet over a distance of 88 nautical miles in a period of 16 minutes. Subsequently, the aircraft entered a level cruise, maintaining an altitude of 35,347 feet for a duration of 173 minutes as it covered a distance of 1,457 nautical miles.
The subsequent part of the flight involved a series of enroute climbs and level cruise segments. This began with a steep climb from an altitude of 35,099 feet to 37,073 feet over a distance of 29 nautical miles, lasting only 3 minutes. After that, the aircraft resumed level flight for 100 minutes until it climbed again, this time reaching an altitude of 38,177 feet. Following this, there was another enroute climb from 37,189 feet to 38,177 feet over 12 nautical miles, lasting only 2 minutes.
The aircraft continued to climb to 38,323 feet before beginning its initial descent to 8,808 feet over a distance of 103 nautical miles. This descent took 19 minutes, preparing the aircraft for the landing phase.
The Boeing 777-300 began its final approach to runway 07R at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport coming from the west, heading 77.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,185 feet. Landing was successful, with the touchdown point being 223 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed of 146 knots was slightly higher than the recommended speed.
The landing distance of 2,332 meters covered a significant portion of the 3,077 meter-long runway. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned, deviating by 4.2 meters from the centerline. Runway rollout alignment was excellent.
After landing, the aircraft took 5 minutes to taxi to the parking area, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. In total, the flight covered a distance of 2,833 nautical miles and utilized approximately 46,420 kg of fuel over a period of 375 minutes.
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully completed a landing at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport's runway 07R, demonstrating a satisfactory approach to landing. The crew's final approach to the runway was well-executed, starting from a distance of approximately 4 nautical miles west of the runway and descending from an altitude of 1,185 feet above ground level (agl) to touch down on the runway. The aircraft's heading of 77.0 degrees at the point of landing was accurate, indicating a precise control of the aircraft's descent and approach to the runway.
The touchdown on runway 07R was marked by a threshold height of 147 knots, which was well within the expected range for a safe landing. However, the touchdown speed of 146 knots was a fraction higher than desired, suggesting a slightly firmer than ideal touchdown. This may have been due to an undercorrection on the part of the crew during the flare or other factors contributing to the aircraft's descent. Nevertheless, the touchdown rate of -347 feet per minute (fpm) was firm, suggesting a controlled deceleration during the landing process.
One of the notable aspects of this landing was the slight misalignment of the runway touchdown position by 4.2 meters (m) from the runway centerline. This deviation may have been due to a combination of factors including pilot input, aircraft response, or runway conditions. Nonetheless, the landing was still successful, with the crew demonstrating a high degree of proficiency in handling the aircraft during the landing phase.
Local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively favorable, with a temperature of 25 °C and a gentle wind of 1 knot blowing from the northwest at a bearing of 348 degrees. With essentially no crosswind, the crew had a relatively straightforward approach to the runway, making the landing process even smoother and more manageable.
The overall landing distance of 2,332 meters (m) was an impressive 76% of the available runway length of 3,077 m, indicating a precise control of the aircraft's descent and a successful flare. The runway rollout alignment was also noteworthy, with the aircraft demonstrating a very good alignment with the runway centerline, resulting in a smooth transition from the landing process to taxiing. Overall, this landing was characteristic of the high standards of airmanship and technical skill that airmen strive for during a safe and successful landing operation.
