Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,199 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,199 ft of the 9,559 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,199 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, taxiing from its parking position to the runway at Cologne-Bonn Airport (EDDK), taking 5 minutes and covering a short distance of less than 1 nautical mile. On departure, the plane took off from runway 13L, covering a distance of 5,213 feet, which accounted for 42% of the runway. It lifted off at a speed of 159 knots.
As it departed, the weather was favorable with a temperature of 73°F and a wind speed of 8 knots at an angle of 89 degrees. This resulted in a headwind of 5 knots and a crosswind of 6 knots. Following takeoff, the aircraft began its enroute climb, commencing at a point 1 mile northwest of Lohmar, Germany. It climbed from an altitude of 1,373 feet above sea level to a maximum altitude of 36,691 feet, a vertical increase of 35,317 feet in just 21 minutes, while covering a distance of 113 nautical miles.
As it continued its journey, the aircraft transitioned into a level cruise, starting 2 miles northeast of Braine-le-Comte, Belgium. It maintained this steady altitude for 65 minutes, covering a distance of 449 nautical miles. Following this period of steady flight, the aircraft entered its descent phase, beginning 1 mile south of Villedaigne, France. It descended from an altitude of 36,903 feet above sea level to a final altitude of 1,277 feet, a decrease of 35,626 feet in just 32 minutes, while covering a distance of 116 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 24R at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport (LEBL) was made from the northeast, heading at an angle of 246.0 degrees. At a height of 4 nautical miles and 1,257 feet above ground level, the aircraft prepared to land. With a runway length of 9,559 feet, a good threshold height, and a threshold speed of 136 knots, the landing was smooth and controlled.
The aircraft touched down at a speed of 129 knots, covering a distance of 1,204 feet, which was well within the acceptable limits. However, the touchdown rate of -262 feet per minute was slightly lower than optimal. Nevertheless, the runway alignment was excellent, and the pilot was able to maintain perfect control during the rollout. The aircraft taxiied to its parking position, taking just 4 minutes and covering less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 685 nautical miles, taking 2 hours and 6 minutes, and the aircraft consumed 11,718 pounds of fuel during the journey. Overall, the flight operated smoothly and efficiently, with favorable weather conditions and precise control throughout the entire journey.
A Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed on runway 24R at LEBL Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, indicating a high level of proficiency on the part of the pilots. The final approach began from the north east, heading 246.0° at an altitude of 1,257 ft above ground level (agl) and a distance of 4 nm from the runway. Throughout the approach, the aircraft maintained an accurate alignment with the runway, evident in the perfect runway rollout alignment after landing.
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a suitable touchdown speed of 129 kt, which met the threshold speed of 136 kt. A touchdown distance of 1,204 ft was also recorded, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. Although the touchdown rate was fair at -262 fpm, it did not deviate significantly from the expected value. It is worth noting that a touchdown rate close to -250 fpm is generally considered optimal for a Boeing 737-800.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 79° F and a wind speed of only 3 kt from a direction of 150°. This resulted in a minimal crosswind component of 3 kt, allowing the pilots to maintain a stable and aligned approach. With no headwind component, the aircraft experienced a zero ground speed component due to wind. Overall, the wind conditions did not pose any significant challenges to the pilots, enabling them to execute a precise landing.
The total landing distance of 4,939 ft, accounting for about 52% of the available runway length, was well within the safe landing parameters. This highlights the pilots' ability to control the aircraft during the landing phase and manage the aircraft's energy with precision. In conclusion, the landing of the Boeing 737-800 on runway 24R at LEBL Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport demonstrated high pilot proficiency, with accurate aircraft control and adherence to safety standards.
