Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,282 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,282 m of the 3,986 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 786 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Heraklion International Nikos Kazantzakis Airport, the Boeing 737-800 began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took approximately 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. As it reached the runway threshold, the aircraft initiated its departure roll on runway 09, accelerating to a liftoff speed of 166 knots. The takeoff distance of 1,780 meters, which accounted for 80% of the runway, was achieved with a local wind of 5 knots at 139 degrees, resulting in a negligible crosswind component and a 3-knot headwind.
As the aircraft climbed away from Heraklion, it began its enroute climb, reaching an altitude of 31,773 feet above sea level in 28 minutes, covering a distance of 176 nautical miles. The climb phase was followed by a level cruise, which started 2 miles east of Nea Epidavros and lasted for 121 minutes, covering a distance of 872 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, initiated overhead Weissenburg in Bayern, and descended to 1,745 feet above sea level in 24 minutes, covering a distance of 127 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 25L at Frankfurt Airport was conducted from the east, with a heading of 250.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,392 feet above ground level.
The Boeing 737-800 landed on runway 25L at Frankfurt Airport, with a total landing distance of 2,203 meters, accounting for 55% of the runway. The touchdown point was 371 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed of 130 knots was within the target range. The touchdown rate of -310 feet per minute was firm, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good. Following the landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, a process that took 10 minutes and covered 2 nautical miles. The total flight distance of 1,186 nautical miles was achieved in 188 minutes, with a fuel consumption of 9,461 kilograms.
The Boeing 737-800 touched down on runway 25L at EDDF Frankfurt Airport with a firm touchdown rate of -310 fpm, indicating a controlled descent. The aircraft's speed at touchdown was 130 kt, which was within the acceptable range. The threshold speed, however, was slightly below the target at 142 kt, suggesting a slightly more aggressive approach configuration.
The approach quality was good, with a stable and controlled descent from 1,392 ft agl at 4 nm from the runway. The aircraft maintained a heading of 250.0°, aligning well with the runway centerline. The touchdown point was 371 m beyond the touchdown zone, which is within the acceptable range. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 9 °C and a headwind of 3 kt, did not pose any significant challenges to the landing.
The rollout phase was smooth, with the aircraft maintaining very good centerline alignment. The total landing distance of 2,203 m was 55% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. Overall, the landing was considered good, with a score of 93.3%. The combination of a firm touchdown rate, good touchdown speed, and excellent rollout alignment contributed to a successful landing.
