Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 7,049 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 7,049 ft of the 12,040 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 3,327 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-MAX8, then departed from runway 22 at LaGuardia Airport (KLGA) in New York. The takeoff distance was 968 feet, which accounted for 14% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 149 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit and winds of 4 knots at 70 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, while the tailwind was 3 knots. The enroute climb started overhead Jackson Heights, New York, where the aircraft ascended from 1,046 feet above sea level to 33,344 feet above sea level, an increase of 32,298 feet in 16 minutes and covering a distance of 82 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began overhead Solt Field Leighton in Pennsylvania and lasted for 182 minutes, covering a distance of 1,227 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent 13 miles north of Jackson Airfield Yuma in Colorado, descending from 34,003 feet above sea level to 10,135 feet above sea level, a decrease of 23,868 feet in 19 minutes and covering a distance of 101 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise resumed 1 mile north-east of Aurora, Colorado, and lasted for 3 minutes, covering a distance of 9 nautical miles. The enroute descent began 3 miles north-east of Foxfield, Colorado, where the aircraft descended from 9,525 feet above sea level to 6,633 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,892 feet in 4 minutes and covering a distance of 11 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 34R at Denver International Airport (KDEN) was made from the south, with the aircraft heading 0.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,271 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 34R, which had a length of 12,040 feet. The threshold height was slightly above the target, while the threshold speed was also slightly above the target at 149 knots.
The touchdown point was 1,983 feet beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 132 knots, which was considered good. The touchdown rate was fair at -221 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions remained the same, with a temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit and winds of 4 knots at 70 degrees. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the headwind was 1 knot.
The total landing distance was 6,805 feet, which accounted for 57% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,441 nautical miles, taking a total of 245 minutes and using 19,654 pounds of fuel.
The Boeing 737-MAX8 aircraft successfully landed at KDEN Denver International Airport on runway 34R. The final approach was initiated from the south, with the aircraft heading 0.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,271 feet above ground level (agl). The landing was executed with a slight deviation from the target threshold height, which was at 55 feet agl, but still within acceptable limits.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was slightly above the target at 149 knots, but the touchdown speed of 132 knots was considered good. The touchdown rate of -221 feet per minute (fpm) was fair, indicating a moderate rate of descent. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 68°F and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 70°. The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the headwind component was 1 knot. These conditions did not appear to have a significant impact on the landing.
The total landing distance of 6,805 feet was 57% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was well-controlled during the rollout phase and did not deviate significantly from the centerline.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft touching down safely and rolling out without incident. The slight deviations from the target threshold height and speed were minor and did not appear to have any significant impact on the landing.
