Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 300 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
At the 300 ft gate: off the centreline.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 874 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 874 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 329 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Nadzab Airport, AYNZ, took approximately 5 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then began its departure roll on runway 09, utilizing 58% of the 2,400-meter runway to achieve a takeoff distance of 1,411 meters. Liftoff speed was reached at 71 knots, with a local temperature of 27 degrees Celsius and a negligible wind effect of 1 knot at 225 degrees.
Following a smooth departure, the aircraft initiated its enroute climb approximately 1 mile east of Nadzab Airport, rising from 1,231 feet above sea level to 10,165 feet in just 5 minutes, covering a distance of 9 nautical miles. The climb phase was followed by a brief level cruise, lasting 5 minutes and covering 16 nautical miles, before the aircraft began its descent towards Bulolo, Morobe Province. The descent phase saw a decrease of 5,119 feet in 5 minutes, covering 15 nautical miles. The aircraft then leveled off for a short period, lasting 2 minutes and covering 4 nautical miles, before resuming its descent towards Wau Airport. The final descent phase saw a decrease of 1,463 feet in 3 minutes, covering 6 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 22 at Wau Airport, AYWU, from the north-east, aligning with the runway at 0 nautical miles and -9 feet above ground level. The landing was executed with a threshold height significantly above target, but with a threshold speed of 67 knots and a touchdown speed of 56 knots, both of which were within acceptable limits. The touchdown distance of 326 meters was also within the desired range, with a touchdown rate of 213 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.1 meters from the centreline, and the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 8.4 meters from the centreline. The total landing distance was 470 meters, accounting for 54% of the 874-meter runway. The aircraft used a total of 59 kilograms of fuel for the 53-nautical-mile flight, which took approximately 24 minutes to complete.
The final approach to runway 22 at AYWU Wau Airport from the north east was initiated at a heading of 231.0°, 0 nm from the threshold, and -9 ft above ground level. The approach quality was satisfactory, with a threshold height of 84 ft agl, significantly above the target, but the threshold speed was good at 67 kt. The aircraft maintained a steady descent, touching down at a distance of 326 m, which was within acceptable limits. The touchdown speed of 56 kt was also good, and the touchdown rate of 213 fpm was perfect, indicating a smooth and controlled touchdown.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.1 m from the centreline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the approach or a minor issue with the aircraft's directional control. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 21 °C and a headwind of 8 kt, may have also played a role in the slight misalignment. The total landing distance of 470 m was 54% of the runway length, which is within acceptable limits.
During the rollout phase, the aircraft's alignment was again slightly misaligned by 8.4 m from the centreline, which may have been due to a combination of factors, including the initial touchdown position and the aircraft's directional control. Despite these minor issues, the overall landing performance was satisfactory, with a score of 83.5%. The pilot's ability to maintain a steady descent and control the aircraft during touchdown and rollout was evident, and the landing was completed safely.
