Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,012 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,012 m of the 2,753 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 729 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Airbus A350-1000 taxied from the parking area to runway 08R at KMIA Miami International Airport in 4 minutes, covering less than 1 nm.
During the departure roll on runway 08R, the aircraft used 1,259 m of runway, representing 39 % of the available length, and lifted off at 162 kt; ambient temperature was 35 °C with wind 19 kt from 110°, a 7 kt cross-wind component and a 17 kt head-wind component.
The initial climb began 1 mile south-east of Miami Springs, climbing from 981 ft asl to 35,003 ft asl, an increase of 34,022 ft achieved in 30 minutes while covering 218 nm.
Level cruise commenced 81 miles north-east of MYAW Walkers Cay Airport and continued for 153 minutes, during which 1,351 nm were flown.
A subsequent climb started 80 miles north-east of CSB2 Sable Island Landing Strip, rising from 36,429 ft asl to 37,000 ft asl, a gain of 571 ft in 2 minutes over a distance of 14 nm.
The next cruise segment began 95 miles north-east of CSB2 Sable Island Landing Strip and lasted 40 minutes, covering 374 nm.
A further climb was initiated 64 miles north-east of Bonavista, increasing altitude from 37,000 ft asl to 37,983 ft asl, a rise of 983 ft in 2 minutes across 15 nm.
The following cruise phase started 79 miles north-east of Bonavista and persisted for 198 minutes, during which 1,758 nm were traversed.
Descent began 4 miles south-west of Holyhead (Anglesey, Wales), descending from 38,897 ft asl to 1,581 ft asl, a loss of 37,316 ft in 31 minutes while covering 175 nm.
The final approach to runway 27 at EGNX East Midlands Airport was flown from the east on a heading of 268.0°, intercepting the glide path at 4 nm and 1,276 ft agl.
Landing on runway 27 was executed with a threshold speed of 149 kt; touchdown occurred 332 m beyond the touchdown zone at 162 kt, with a vertical speed of minus 196 fpm and a lateral deviation of 6.5 m from the centreline. The total landing roll measured 1,950 m, representing 71 % of the runway length.
Runway rollout alignment was slightly off centreline by 12.5 m, after which the aircraft completed the landing phase.
In total, the flight covered 3,913 nm, required 462 minutes of airborne time, and consumed 53,395 kg of fuel.
The Airbus A350-1000 established a final approach to runway 27 at East Midlands (EGNX) from the east, tracking a heading of 268.0° at 4 NM and 1,276 ft agl. Ambient conditions were 14 °C with a wind of 9 kt from 230°, giving a 7 kt headwind component and a 6 kt cross-wind component.
Threshold speed was recorded at 149 kt, noted as well above the target, while the threshold height was described as good.
Touchdown occurred 332 m beyond the designated touchdown zone, with a speed of 162 kt that was identified as too fast. The vertical rate at touchdown was good at minus 196 fpm and the aircraft was slightly off the centreline by 6.5 m. Total landing distance measured 1,950 m, representing 71 % of the runway length.
During rollout the aircraft remained slightly misaligned, deviating 12.5 m from the centreline.
Reduce the approach and touchdown speeds toward their target values to keep the touchdown point within the zone and to minimise runway usage. Fine-tune speed management and flare timing to achieve a more precise touchdown location and alignment.
