Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,524 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 72 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The 3.99 G arrival is the firm side of smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Madeira International Airport Cristiano Ronaldo, which took approximately 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 05, with the aircraft taking off after covering 19% of the runway, a distance of 464 meters. The liftoff speed was 134 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 19°C and a wind speed of 9 knots at 340 degrees. The crosswind was 8 knots, while the headwind was 4 knots. The enroute climb began overhead Machico, Madeira, Portugal, where the aircraft climbed from an altitude of 1,038 feet above sea level to 46 feet above sea level, an increase of 992 feet in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles.
The final approach to landing took place 1 mile east of Canical, Madeira, Portugal, with the aircraft descending from an altitude of 47 feet above ground level to 0 feet above ground level. The descent took place over a distance of 1 nautical mile, and the aircraft touched down at a speed of 65 knots. However, the touchdown rate was very heavy, at -1,692 feet per minute, and the touchdown distance was good at 66 meters.
Following the touchdown, the aircraft underwent a landing rollout, covering a distance of 46 meters at an altitude of 0 feet above sea level. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 18°C and a wind speed of 9 knots at 339 degrees, with a crosswind of 8 knots and a headwind of 5 knots.
The total flight distance was 5 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 3 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 1,899 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A32NX aircraft successfully landed on the ground 1 mile east of Canical in Madeira, Portugal. The final approach was initiated from a distance of 1 nautical mile, with the aircraft descending from an altitude of 47 feet above ground level (agl) to touch down safely. The descent was quite steep, with a decrease of 49 feet in just 1 second, indicating a rapid loss of altitude.
Upon approaching the touchdown point, the aircraft's speed was 65 knots, which was considered good for a safe landing. However, the touchdown rate was extremely heavy, with a rate of -1,692 feet per minute (fpm). This high rate of descent suggests that the aircraft may have been experiencing a significant amount of drag or that the pilot may have been attempting to touch down quickly. Fortunately, the touchdown distance was good, measuring 66 meters.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 18 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 9 knots from a direction of 339 degrees. The crosswind component was 8 knots, while the headwind component was 5 knots. These conditions may have contributed to the heavy touchdown rate, as the pilot may have been attempting to compensate for the wind.
Following the touchdown, the aircraft's landing rollout was relatively short, covering a distance of 46 meters. The aircraft's altitude was at 0 feet above sea level (asl) during this phase of the landing, indicating a safe and controlled rollout. Overall, the landing was successful, but the heavy touchdown rate may be a concern for future flights.
