Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,576 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,576 m of the 3,008 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 393 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Boeing 777F taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport, FBSK, which took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed from runway 08, with a takeoff distance of 2,066 meters, which was 52% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 177 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions of a temperature of 34 degrees Celsius and winds of 3 knots at 96 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the headwind was 3 knots. After departing from FBSK, the aircraft began its enroute climb, starting 2 miles northeast of the airport and climbing from an altitude of 4,312 feet above sea level to 36,822 feet above sea level, an increase of 32,510 feet in 26 minutes, covering a distance of 185 nautical miles.
The enroute climb continued until the aircraft reached a point 9 miles southwest of Central Kalahari Airport, FBMS, where it began its level cruise. This phase of the flight lasted for 432 minutes, covering a distance of 3,532 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 47 miles southwest of Gueltat Zemmour Airport, GMGU, and descending from 36,762 feet above sea level to 2,455 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,308 feet in 21 minutes, covering a distance of 111 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another level cruise, this time starting 11 miles southwest of Dakhla and lasting only 2 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 6 miles south of Dakhla and descending from 2,000 feet above sea level to 1,332 feet above sea level, a decrease of 668 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 4 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 03 at Dakhla Airport, GMMH, was made from the south, heading 23.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,288 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown speed of 141 knots, a touchdown distance of 396 meters, and a touchdown rate of -163 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.2 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 18 degrees Celsius and winds of 18 knots at 20 degrees. The crosswind was 1 knot, and the headwind was 18 knots. The total landing distance was 1,495 meters, which was 50% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxiied to the parking area, which took 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 3,847 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 494 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 72,506 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 777F aircraft successfully landed at GMMH Dakhla Airport, achieving a high score of 99.8%. The final approach to runway 03 was conducted from the south, with a heading of 23.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,288 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach and landing were executed smoothly, with a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 141 knots.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft demonstrated a good touchdown distance of 396 meters, which is well within the acceptable range. The touchdown speed was also maintained at 141 knots, indicating a controlled descent. The touchdown rate of -163 feet per minute (fpm) was within the normal range, further emphasizing the pilot's skill and control during the landing.
However, there was a slight deviation in the runway touchdown position, with the aircraft being 3.2 meters off-centerline. This minor misalignment did not significantly impact the overall landing performance. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 18°C and a headwind of 18 knots at 20°.
The crosswind component was minimal, at 1 knot, which contributed to a stable and controlled landing. The total landing distance of 1,495 meters was within 50% of the runway length, indicating a safe and efficient landing. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, demonstrating the pilot's ability to maintain control and stability during the post-landing phase.
Overall, the Boeing 777F aircraft's landing at GMMH Dakhla Airport was a success, with the pilot demonstrating excellent skills and control throughout the approach and landing phases.
