Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,623 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,623 m of the 2,990 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 485 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-300, then departed from runway 31 at SABE Jorge Newbery Airpark. The takeoff distance was 782 meters, which was 40% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 156 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 36 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 2 knots at 175 degrees.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it started its enroute climb overhead SB11 Buenos Aires, Argentina. The climb began at an altitude of 1,079 feet above sea level and reached a maximum altitude of 36,790 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,711 feet in 17 minutes, covering a distance of 113 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 8 miles south of Sarandi Grande, Uruguay, and lasted for 180 minutes, covering a distance of 1,474 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 13 miles southeast of Itagiba, Brazil. The descent started at an altitude of 36,783 feet above sea level and ended at an altitude of 1,355 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,428 feet in 22 minutes, covering a distance of 118 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 10 at SBSV Deputado Luiz Eduardo Magalhães International Airport was made from the west, heading 78.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,307 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown point 69 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 130 knots, which was good, and the touchdown rate was fair at -250 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 28 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 6 knots at 90 degrees. The crosswind was 1 knot, and the headwind was 6 knots. The total landing distance was 1,542 meters, which was 52% of the runway length. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 1,714 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 230 minutes. The aircraft used 26,255 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully landed at SBSV Deputado Luiz Eduardo Magalhães International Airport, showcasing a high level of precision and control. The final approach to runway 10 from the west was executed at a heading of 78.0°, with the aircraft at an altitude of 1,307 feet above ground level (agl) and 4 nautical miles from the runway. This positioning allowed the pilots to maintain a safe and controlled descent.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down 69 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. However, the touchdown speed of 130 knots was within the acceptable range, indicating that the pilots had maintained control and managed the aircraft's descent effectively. The touchdown rate of -250 feet per minute (fpm) was fair, suggesting that the pilots could have potentially achieved a smoother touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 28°C and a gentle headwind of 6 knots at 90°. The crosswind component was minimal, at 1 knot, which further contributed to the smooth landing. The runway length of 2,990 meters provided ample space for the aircraft to come to a stop, and the pilots successfully utilized 52% of the runway's length, resulting in a total landing distance of 1,542 meters.
The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilots had maintained control and alignment of the aircraft during the post-landing phase. Overall, the landing was executed with a high degree of precision and control, reflecting the skills and expertise of the pilots involved.
