Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,599 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,599 m of the 2,790 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 412 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A321, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at ESNU Umeå Airport in Sweden. This process took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 14, and the takeoff distance was 1,171 meters, which is 52% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 159 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of Umeå Airport, it began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile south east of the airport. The climb took 21 minutes, during which the aircraft ascended from 1,037 feet above sea level to 37,945 feet above sea level, an increase of 36,908 feet. The aircraft covered a distance of 151 nautical miles during this climb.
After reaching the cruising altitude, the aircraft entered a level cruise, starting 26 miles south east of Stroemsbruk in Sweden. This phase of the flight lasted 54 minutes and covered a distance of 442 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent, starting 1 mile north of EKSK Skive HEMS Heliport in Denmark. The descent took 9 minutes, during which the aircraft descended from 36,926 feet above sea level to 11,241 feet above sea level, a decrease of 25,685 feet. The aircraft covered a distance of 65 nautical miles during this descent.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting 1 mile south of Eutin in Germany. This phase of the flight lasted only 2 minutes and covered a distance of 9 nautical miles.
As the aircraft continued its descent, it began its final approach to runway 23 at EDDH Hamburg Helmut Schmidt Airport from the north east. The aircraft was heading 230.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,316 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway.
The aircraft landed on runway 23, which is 2,790 meters long. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed at 136 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 410 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 131 knots. The touchdown rate was firm at -368 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 6 degrees Celsius, a wind speed of 5 knots at 140 degrees, with a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 0 knots. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area, taking 7 minutes and covering a distance of 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 699 nautical miles, and the flight took 107 minutes. The aircraft used 4,615 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at EDDH Hamburg Helmut Schmidt Airport, achieving a high score of 98.4%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north east, heading 230.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,316 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with precision, and the aircraft landed safely on runway 23, which has a length of 2,790 meters.
The threshold height was good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct altitude as it approached the runway. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 135 kt, coming in at 136 kt. Despite this minor deviation, the touchdown distance was good, measuring 410 meters. The touchdown speed of 131 kt was a little fast, but the firm touchdown rate of -368 feet per minute (fpm) suggests that the aircraft was able to absorb the impact smoothly.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 6°C and a wind speed of 5 kt from 140°. This resulted in a crosswind of 5 kt and a headwind of 0 kt. The total landing distance of 1,514 meters was 54% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop safely within a reasonable distance.
One of the standout aspects of this landing was the perfect runway rollout alignment. This suggests that the aircraft's brakes were applied smoothly and effectively, allowing the aircraft to come to a stop in a straight line. Overall, this landing was a testament to the skill and precision of the pilots, as well as the capabilities of the Airbus A321 aircraft.
