Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,622 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,622 m of the 2,431 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 720 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from LaGuardia Airport (KLGA), the Airbus A321 began its journey with a taxiing phase that lasted 9 minutes and covered 2 nautical miles. Upon reaching the runway, the aircraft initiated its departure roll on runway 13, utilizing 53% of the available length to achieve liftoff at a speed of 144 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure featured a temperature of 6°C, with a wind of 9 knots at 69°, resulting in a crosswind of 7 knots and a headwind of 5 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to its enroute cruise altitude, it traversed a significant distance, increasing its altitude from 1,029 feet above sea level to 36,020 feet in 15 minutes, covering 137 nautical miles. The climb phase was followed by a 24-minute level cruise, during which the aircraft covered 672 nautical miles. The descent phase commenced 59 miles east of Cape Canaveral SFS Skid Strip (KXMR), with the aircraft decreasing its altitude from 35,994 feet to 4,806 feet in 9 minutes, covering 103 nautical miles. The flight continued with multiple level cruise and descent phases, ultimately leading to a final approach to runway 10L at Palm Beach International Airport (KPBI).
The aircraft touched down on runway 10L, with a touchdown point located 303 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was slightly above the target at 145 knots, while the touchdown rate was good at -156 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was also satisfactory. The total landing distance was 1,540 meters, accounting for 63% of the available runway length. Following a taxiing phase that lasted 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile, the aircraft arrived at its parking position, having completed a total flight distance of 959 nautical miles and utilizing 6,604 kilograms of fuel.
The aircraft touched down on runway 10L at KPBI Palm Beach International Airport with a threshold height that met expectations. The approach quality was good, with a heading of 93.0° from 4 nautical miles away at 1,291 feet above ground level. The threshold speed was slightly above the target at 145 knots, which may have contributed to a touchdown speed of 135 knots, a little faster than desired. However, the touchdown rate of -156 feet per minute was good, indicating a controlled descent.
The touchdown point was 303 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was well-centered on the runway. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 26°C and a headwind of 16 knots, were favorable for the landing. The crosswind component was minimal, at 1 knot, which further contributed to a smooth touchdown.
The total landing distance of 1,540 meters was 63% of the runway length, which is within acceptable limits. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft remained well-centered on the runway during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was scored 95.8%, reflecting a high level of proficiency and control throughout the approach, touchdown, and rollout phases.
