Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,047 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,047 m of the 3,242 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 858 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Airbus A321neo taxied from the parking area to runway 36 at LTFM İstanbul Airport in 5 minutes, covering less than 1 nm.
During the departure roll on runway 36, the aircraft accelerated to a liftoff speed of 167 kt and left the ground after a takeoff distance of 1,269 m, representing 41 % of the runway; local weather was 24 °C with a 9 kt wind from 0°, no cross-wind and a 9 kt head-wind.
Climb began overhead LTFM İstanbul Airport Arnavutköy, rising from 1,295 ft asl to 28,051 ft asl, an increase of 26,756 ft achieved in 12 minutes while covering 75 nm.
The first cruise segment started 10 miles south of Marmara Ereglisi (Tekirdag, Turkey) and lasted 13 minutes, during which the aircraft flew 98 nm at level altitude.
Descent commenced 11 miles south-east of Havran (Balikesir, Turkey), descending from 28,053 ft asl to 5,017 ft asl, a loss of 23,036 ft in 15 minutes and covering 86 nm.
A second cruise phase began 6 miles south-east of Menderes (Izmir, Turkey), lasting 8 minutes and spanning 37 nm.
The next descent started 3 miles south of Torbali (Izmir, Turkey), dropping from 5,508 ft asl to 1,669 ft asl, a decrease of 3,839 ft in 5 minutes and covering 21 nm.
Final approach to runway 34R at LTBJ Adnan Menderes International Airport was executed from the south on a heading of 347.0° at 4 nm and 1,267 ft agl; the aircraft descended from 1,336 ft agl to 85 ft agl in 87 seconds and scored on the stabilisation gates.
Landing on runway 34R was performed with a threshold speed of 134 kt, slightly below target; touchdown occurred 442 m beyond the touchdown zone at a speed of 134 kt and a vertical rate of minus 296 fpm, with the touchdown point misaligned by 12.3 m from the centreline. Weather at the time was 30 °C with a 4 kt wind from 343°, no cross-wind and a 4 kt head-wind. Total landing distance measured 1,966 m, representing 61 % of the runway.
Runway rollout continued with a total distance of 1,966 m and the aircraft’s alignment was slightly off centreline by 13.0 m during the rollout.
The aircraft taxied from the runway to the parking area in 3 minutes, covering less than 1 nm.
Overall, the flight covered 327 nm, lasted 63 minutes, and consumed 2,719 kg of fuel.
The Airbus A321neo approached runway 34R at LTBJ Adnan Menderes International Airport from the south on a heading of 347.0° at 4 nm and 1,267 ft agl. At the 1,000 ft gate the approach was assessed as unstable, being more than 20 kt above VREF, and the aircraft descended from 1,336 ft agl to 85 ft agl in 87 seconds, scoring on the stabilisation gates.
During the threshold and flare the aircraft established a threshold speed slightly below target at 134 kt. The touchdown point occurred 442 m beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed of 134 kt was recorded as good. The touchdown rate was fair at minus 296 fpm and the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 12.3 m from the centreline.
Touchdown was executed with a speed of 134 kt and a vertical rate of minus 296 fpm, while the aircraft touched down 442 m beyond the designated touchdown zone and was laterally offset 12.3 m from the centreline.
Rollout covered a total landing distance of 1,966 m, representing 61 % of the 3,242 m runway, and the aircraft’s rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 13.0 m from the centreline.
To improve the score, the crew should focus on achieving a stabilised approach within the VREF envelope and aim to touch down within the designated zone, while also refining lateral alignment to reduce centreline deviation during touchdown and rollout.
