Work on the flare
See Arrival Landing
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 10,004 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,335 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Albany International Airport, the Airbus A321 began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took approximately 9 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. As the aircraft reached the runway threshold, it initiated its departure roll on runway 01, accelerating to a liftoff speed of 149 knots. The takeoff distance of 4,223 feet was achieved at 50% of the runway length, with the aircraft clearing the ground in a relatively short distance.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it transitioned into an enroute climb, ascending from an initial altitude of 1,273 feet above sea level to a cruising altitude of 36,009 feet. This climb phase, which lasted 20 minutes, covered a distance of 108 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered a level cruise, maintaining a steady altitude and airspeed as it traversed the skies over New York and into Ontario, Canada. This cruise phase, which lasted 31 minutes, covered a distance of 187 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, gradually losing altitude as it approached its destination. The descent phase, which lasted 27 minutes, covered a distance of 126 nautical miles and saw the aircraft descend from 36,028 feet to 5,009 feet above sea level.
As the aircraft approached Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, it initiated its final approach to runway 21L, aligning itself with the runway and descending to a safe altitude. The landing was executed smoothly, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 128 knots and a rate of -140 feet per minute. The touchdown point was 970 feet beyond the touchdown zone, but the runway rollout alignment was very good. The total landing distance of 3,986 feet was achieved at 40% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. Following the landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, a process that took approximately 7 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 447 nautical miles, and the aircraft used 8,878 pounds of fuel during the journey, which lasted a total of 101 minutes.
The aircraft touched down on runway 21L at KDTW Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport with a threshold height that met the desired standards. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target, registering 143 kt. The approach quality was otherwise good, with a smooth touchdown rate of -140 fpm achieved at a speed of 128 kt. The touchdown point was located 970 ft beyond the touchdown zone, which was slightly longer than ideal but still within acceptable parameters.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 11 ft from the centreline, which may have been due to the 1 kt crosswind component. Despite this, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the critical phase of the landing. The total landing distance of 3,986 ft was 40% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range for a commercial airliner like the Airbus A321.
Overall, the landing was considered satisfactory, with a score of 95.2%. The good threshold height, smooth touchdown rate, and very good runway rollout alignment were notable aspects of the landing. However, the slightly above-target threshold speed and slight misalignment of the runway touchdown position were areas for improvement. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 39 °F and a 4 kt headwind, did not appear to have a significant impact on the landing.
