Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,748 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,748 ft of the 12,746 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,240 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 27 at Melbourne International Airport (YMML). The takeoff distance was 4,693 feet, which accounted for 63% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 163 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 55°F and a wind speed of 10 knots at 280°. The crosswind was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind was 10 knots. The enroute climb began 1 mile south of Bulla, Victoria, and saw the aircraft ascend from 1,439 feet above sea level to 33,715 feet, an increase of 32,276 feet in 17 minutes, covering a distance of 97 nautical miles.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 1 mile south of Moyhu, Victoria, and lasted for 20 minutes. During this period, the aircraft covered a distance of 164 nautical miles. The enroute descent began 3 miles northeast of Murrumbateman, New South Wales, and saw the aircraft descend from 34,035 feet to 1,279 feet, a decrease of 32,756 feet in 26 minutes, covering a distance of 118 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its final approach to runway 34L at Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport (YSSY). The approach was made from the south, heading 348.0°, at 4 nautical miles and 1,255 feet above ground level. The landing was executed on runway 34L, which had a length of 12,746 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was well above the target at 148 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 1,245 feet, while the touchdown speed was fast at 147 knots. The touchdown rate was fair at -283 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 54°F and a wind speed of 13 knots at 310°, with a crosswind of 8 knots and a headwind of 11 knots.
The total landing distance was 5,491 feet, accounting for 43% of the runway length. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 8 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 387 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 77 minutes. The aircraft used 6,950 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport (YSSY) on runway 34L. The final approach was conducted from the south, with the aircraft heading 348.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,255 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft maintained a good threshold height, indicating a stable and controlled descent.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was significantly above the target speed, reaching 148 knots. This suggests that the pilots may have been attempting to slow the aircraft down more quickly than necessary, potentially due to the presence of a crosswind. The touchdown distance of 1,245 feet was within acceptable limits, but the touchdown speed of 147 knots was slightly faster than ideal. This resulted in a fair touchdown rate of -283 feet per minute (fpm), which may have put some stress on the aircraft's landing gear.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 54°F and a wind speed of 13 knots from a direction of 310°. This resulted in a crosswind component of 8 knots and a headwind component of 11 knots. Despite these conditions, the pilots were able to maintain a very good runway touchdown alignment, indicating a high degree of skill and control.
The total landing distance of 5,491 feet was 43% of the available runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This suggests that the pilots were able to bring the aircraft to a stop quickly and efficiently, with a perfect runway rollout alignment. Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilots demonstrated a high level of proficiency and control throughout the approach and landing phases.
