Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,299 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,299 m of the 2,985 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 899 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-MAX8, then departed from runway 08 at Linz-Hörsching Airport / Vogler Air Base. The takeoff distance was 1,631 meters, which accounted for 63% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 164 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 18°C, with a wind speed of 4 knots at 88°. The crosswind was negligible, while the headwind was 4 knots. As the aircraft took off, it began its enroute climb, which started 1 mile northwest of Traun, Austria. The climb was from an altitude of 1,999 feet above sea level to 37,156 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,157 feet in 18 minutes, covering a distance of 91 nautical miles.
After the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which began 8 miles south of Niedernsill, Austria. This phase lasted for 101 minutes and covered a distance of 677 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent, which began 6 miles north of Cala de Portinatx, Spain. The descent was from an altitude of 38,019 feet above sea level to 1,509 feet above sea level, a decrease of 36,510 feet in 29 minutes, covering a distance of 117 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 10 at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport was made from the west, heading 100.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,404 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 10, which had a length of 2,985 meters. The threshold height was above the target, while the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 150 knots. The touchdown point was 488 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 140 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was very heavy at -728 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 29°C, with a wind speed of 8 knots at 90°. The crosswind was 1 knot, while the headwind was 8 knots. The total landing distance was 2,224 meters, which accounted for 75% of the runway.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 6 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 894 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 164 minutes. The aircraft used 5,533 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-MAX8 aircraft successfully landed at LEAL Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport, with a score of 88.4%. The final approach to runway 10 was initiated from the west, heading 100.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,404 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on runway 10, which has a length of 2,985 meters. The threshold height at 62 feet agl was above the target, indicating that the aircraft was slightly higher than desired at the point of touchdown. The threshold speed was also slightly above the target at 150 knots, suggesting that the aircraft may have been slightly fast during the approach.
The touchdown point was located 488 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively significant distance. The touchdown speed of 140 knots was a little fast, indicating that the aircraft may have been able to maintain a higher speed than desired during the landing. The touchdown rate was very heavy at -728 feet per minute (fpm), which is a concern as it may indicate a hard landing.
Despite these issues, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway during the landing. The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were characterized by a temperature of 29°C and a wind speed of 8 knots at 90°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 8 knots, which may have contributed to the aircraft's speed during the landing.
The total landing distance was 2,224 meters, which is 75% of the runway length. This is a relatively long landing distance, indicating that the aircraft may have taken some time to come to a stop after touchdown. However, the runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway during the rollout phase.
Overall, while the landing was not perfect, the aircraft was able to safely touch down on the runway and come to a stop without incident. However, the issues with speed and touchdown rate during the landing are areas that require attention to ensure a smoother and safer landing in the future.
