Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 6,910 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 6,910 ft of the 12,102 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 3,109 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question was operated by an Airbus A380 aircraft, departing from Singapore Changi Airport (WSSS) on runway 02C. The taxiing process from the parking area to the runway took approximately 9 minutes and covered a distance of 4 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its departure roll, taking off with a takeoff distance of 7,662 feet, which was 58% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was recorded at 166 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 83°F and a wind speed of 3 knots at 299 degrees. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the headwind was 0 knots. The enroute climb started approximately 1 mile north-east of the departure airport, with the aircraft ascending from 1,026 feet above sea level to 37,579 feet above sea level, an increase of 36,553 feet in 14 minutes, covering a distance of 180 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered a level cruise phase, which started 5 miles south-east of Serendah, Malaysia, and lasted for 56 minutes, covering a distance of 927 nautical miles. The aircraft continued to climb to higher altitudes, with the next climb phase starting at a latitude of 15.7375587 and a longitude of 92.3092004. The aircraft ascended from 37,551 feet above sea level to 39,099 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,548 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 14 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started at a latitude of 15.9134501 and a longitude of 92.1255578, and lasted for 317 minutes, covering a distance of 2,341 nautical miles. The aircraft continued to climb to higher altitudes, with the next climb phase starting approximately 61 miles south-west of Novokazalinsk, Kazakhstan. The aircraft ascended from 37,706 feet above sea level to 39,710 feet above sea level, an increase of 2,004 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 49 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started approximately 57 miles north-east of UTMO Ostrov Vozrozhdeniya Airport, Mo'ynoq Shahri, Uzbekistan, and lasted for 68 minutes, covering a distance of 1,056 nautical miles. As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent, starting approximately 3 miles east of Marfino, Russia. The aircraft descended from 38,184 feet above sea level to 34,009 feet above sea level, a decrease of 4,174 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 26 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started approximately 3 miles north of UOLY Ol'yavidovo Airport, Ol'yavidovo, Russia, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 26 nautical miles. The aircraft continued its descent, starting approximately 6 miles south-west of Karabanovo, Russia. The aircraft descended from 34,035 feet above sea level to 10,321 feet above sea level, a decrease of 23,713 feet in 11 minutes, covering a distance of 35 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started approximately 1 mile south-east of Yakhroma, Russia, and lasted for 3 minutes, covering a distance of 9 nautical miles. The aircraft continued its descent, starting approximately 5 miles west of Iksha, Russia. The aircraft descended from 10,019 feet above sea level to 2,403 feet above sea level, a decrease of 7,616 feet in
The Airbus A380 has successfully landed at UUEE Sheremetyevo International Airport, but with some notable deviations from the ideal landing parameters. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the east, heading 255.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,274 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with a good threshold speed of 137 knots, which is within the acceptable range.
However, the threshold height at 71 feet agl was significantly above the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been higher than desired at the point of touchdown. The touchdown point was located 1,763 feet beyond the touchdown zone, which is a considerable distance. The touchdown speed of 126 knots was within the acceptable range, but the touchdown rate of -232 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, suggesting that the aircraft may have touched down with a slightly higher rate of descent than desired.
In terms of alignment, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 33 feet from the centreline, which is a notable deviation. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 28°F and a wind speed of 6 knots from 190°. The crosswind component was 5 knots, while the headwind component was 2 knots.
The total landing distance of 6,664 feet was 55% of the available runway length, which is a relatively high percentage. This suggests that the aircraft may have taken a longer distance to come to a stop than desired. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 28 feet from the centreline, which is another deviation from the ideal landing parameters.
Overall, while the Airbus A380 has successfully landed at UUEE Sheremetyevo International Airport, there are some areas for improvement in terms of alignment, touchdown height, and touchdown rate. These deviations may be addressed through further training and practice to achieve a more ideal landing.
