Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 6,004 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 976 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (Lovell Field), the aircraft began its journey on runway 20, accelerating down the 5,610-foot-long runway. The takeoff distance of 1,624 feet, which accounted for 22% of the runway, was achieved at a liftoff speed of 120 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure featured a temperature of 61°F and a wind speed of 1 knot from 270°, resulting in a negligible crosswind component.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it transitioned into an enroute climb, reaching an altitude of 14,070 feet above sea level in just 5 minutes, covering a distance of 22 nautical miles. The climb phase concluded overhead the Calhoun Airport, where the aircraft then entered a level cruise phase, maintaining an altitude of 14,070 feet for 51 minutes while covering a distance of 332 nautical miles. The enroute descent phase began 3 miles east of the Peach Orchard Airport, where the aircraft descended from 15,005 feet to 1,379 feet above sea level in 10 minutes, covering a distance of 53 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 13 at Leesburg International Airport was initiated from the northwest, with the aircraft maintaining a heading of 130.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,292 feet above ground level. The landing was executed with a threshold speed slightly above the target at 110 knots, resulting in a touchdown distance of 958 feet, which was within acceptable limits. The touchdown speed of 103 knots was a little fast, but the touchdown rate of -378 feet per minute was firm. The aircraft touched down 22 feet off-centerline, and the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 36 feet from the centerline. Following a smooth taxiing process, the aircraft came to a stop, concluding the flight with a total distance of 412 nautical miles, which was achieved in 70 minutes, using no fuel.
The Cessna Longitude touched down on runway 13 at KLEE Leesburg International Airport with a threshold height that met expectations. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 110 kt, indicating a slight deviation from the ideal approach speed. The aircraft maintained a steady descent, resulting in a touchdown distance of 958 ft, which was within acceptable limits.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was a little fast at 103 kt, and the touchdown rate was firm at -378 fpm. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 22 ft from the centreline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the approach path. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 59 °F and a wind of 1 kt at 270 °, contributed to a relatively calm environment for the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,737 ft was 31% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range. During the rollout phase, the aircraft's alignment was slightly misaligned by 36 ft from the centreline, indicating a slight deviation from the desired path. Despite these minor deviations, the overall landing performance was satisfactory, earning a score of 93.7%.
