Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,999 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,999 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 576 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at ENGM Oslo Airport, Gardermoen. This process took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed from runway 19R, with a takeoff distance of 1,832 meters, which accounted for 51% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 160 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 10 knots at 170 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 9 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile south of ENGM Oslo Airport, Gardermoen. The climb took 20 minutes and covered a distance of 116 nautical miles, with the aircraft ascending from 1,718 feet above sea level to 37,204 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,485 feet.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, starting 17 miles north of EN25 Solenstua Solenstua. This phase of the flight lasted 49 minutes and covered a distance of 376 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 5 miles south east of Kjopsvik. The descent took 18 minutes and covered a distance of 94 nautical miles, with the aircraft descending from 36,428 feet above sea level to 4,749 feet above sea level, a decrease of 31,679 feet.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting 8 miles north east of Gibostad. This phase of the flight lasted only 3 minutes and covered a distance of 10 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 9 miles south of Tromso. The descent took 2 minutes and covered a distance of 7 nautical miles, with the aircraft descending from 4,527 feet above sea level to 1,718 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,810 feet.
The final approach to runway 36 at ENTC Tromsø Airport, Langnes was made from the south, with the aircraft heading 13.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,681 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 36, which had a length of 1,999 meters. The threshold height at 92 feet above ground level was significantly above the target, but the threshold speed was good at 128 knots.
The touchdown point was 156 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 124 knots, which was good. However, the touchdown rate was very hard at -549 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, but the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 7 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 11 knots at 270 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 11 knots and a tailwind of 3 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,989 meters, which was 100% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 27.3 meters from the centreline. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area from the runway, taking 3 minutes and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 612 nautical miles, taking 107 minutes, and the aircraft used 4,134 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A320 aircraft successfully landed at ENTC Tromsø Airport, Langnes, but with some notable areas for improvement. The final approach to runway 36 from the south was conducted at a heading of 13.0°, with the aircraft at 4 nautical miles and 1,681 feet above ground level (agl). The landing was completed on the runway, which has a length of 1,999 meters.
The threshold height at 92 feet agl was significantly above the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been higher than desired at the point of touchdown. However, the threshold speed of 128 knots was good, suggesting that the pilot had maintained control and was on track for a smooth landing. The touchdown point was 156 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which may indicate a slight over-shooting of the intended landing spot.
The touchdown speed of 124 knots was also good, indicating that the pilot had managed to slow the aircraft down effectively before touchdown. However, the touchdown rate of -549 feet per minute (fpm) was very hard, suggesting that the aircraft may have hit the ground with a significant amount of force. This could be a concern for the safety of the aircraft and its occupants.
The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot had maintained control and was aligned with the runway centerline at the point of touchdown. The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 7°C and a wind speed of 11 knots from a direction of 270°. The crosswind component was 11 knots, while the tailwind component was 3 knots.
The total landing distance of 1,989 meters was 100% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft had used the full length of the runway to come to a stop. However, the runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 27.3 meters from the centerline, suggesting that the pilot may have lost control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. This could be a concern for the safety of the aircraft and its occupants.
Overall, while the landing was successful, there are several areas for improvement, including the high threshold height, hard touchdown rate, and misaligned runway rollout. These issues will need to be addressed in order to ensure the safety and efficiency of future landings at ENTC Tromsø Airport, Langnes.
