Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,573 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,573 m of the 3,987 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 494 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 24 at LIRN Naples International Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,349 meters, which accounted for 66% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 145 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 18 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 329 degrees. The crosswind component was 6 knots, while the headwind component was 0 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead Vicaria in Campania, Italy. The climb took 22 minutes and covered a distance of 117 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 1,283 feet above sea level to 34,967 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,684 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 25 miles northeast of Pineto in Abruzzo, Italy. This phase lasted for 31 minutes and covered a distance of 237 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 1 mile north of Fresach in Kaernten, Austria. The descent took 12 minutes and covered a distance of 81 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from an altitude of 35,316 feet above sea level to 13,889 feet above sea level, a decrease of 21,427 feet.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started overhead Kirchanschoring in Bavaria, Germany. This phase lasted for 5 minutes and covered a distance of 27 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting overhead Kirchdorf in Bavaria, Germany. The descent took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 31 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from an altitude of 13,765 feet above sea level to 3,958 feet above sea level, a decrease of 9,806 feet.
The aircraft then entered a final level cruise phase, which started overhead Hebertshausen in Bavaria, Germany. This phase lasted for 3 minutes and covered a distance of 9 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 08R at EDDM Munich Airport, approaching from the west at a heading of 83.0 degrees and at an altitude of 1,310 feet above ground level.
The landing was made on runway 08R at EDDM Munich Airport, which had a length of 3,987 meters. The threshold height at 61 feet above ground level was above the target, but the threshold speed was good at 134 knots. The touchdown point was 79 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was a little fast at 130 knots. The touchdown rate was firm at -330 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 3 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 82 degrees. The crosswind component was 0 knots, while the headwind component was 3 knots. The total landing distance was 2,493 meters, which accounted for 63% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 10 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 510 nautical miles, and the flight took 94 minutes. The aircraft used 4,674 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at EDDM Munich Airport, achieving a score of 96.8%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the west, heading 83.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,310 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was made to runway 08R, which has a length of 3,987 meters.
Upon reaching the threshold, the aircraft's height was above the target, indicating a slight deviation from the ideal approach path. However, the threshold speed was satisfactory at 134 knots, demonstrating good control and management of the aircraft's descent. The touchdown point was located 79 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which may indicate a slight overcorrection or a slightly fast approach.
The touchdown speed of 130 knots was slightly faster than the ideal speed, which could have contributed to the aircraft's touchdown point being beyond the designated zone. Nevertheless, the touchdown rate was firm at -330 feet per minute (fpm), indicating a controlled and stable descent. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, demonstrating precise control and management of the aircraft's approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 3°C and a wind speed of 3 knots from 82°. The crosswind component was negligible, while the headwind component was 3 knots, which may have contributed to the aircraft's slightly fast approach. The total landing distance was 2,493 meters, which represents 63% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating good control and management of the aircraft's approach and touchdown.
During the rollout, the aircraft's alignment was perfect, demonstrating precise control and management of the aircraft's movement after touchdown. Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score of 96.8%. However, there is room for improvement in terms of approach speed and touchdown point accuracy.
