Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,653 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 522 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a short taxiing period from the parking to the runway, taking approximately 1 minute and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-900, then departed from runway 36L at KNEW Lakefront Airport in New Orleans, Louisiana. The takeoff distance was 1,038 meters, which accounted for 58% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 156 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of -1 °C, with a wind speed of 8 knots at 19°.
As the aircraft climbed out of KNEW Lakefront Airport, it began its enroute climb 1 mile north of the airport, rising from an altitude of 1,028 feet above sea level to 37,456 feet above sea level. This climb, which covered a distance of 223 nautical miles, took 31 minutes and involved an increase of 36,428 feet in altitude. The aircraft then entered a level cruise phase, which started 9 miles east of Hayneville, Alabama, and lasted for 171 minutes, covering a distance of 894 nautical miles.
The enroute descent phase began 4 miles northwest of Hammond, New York, and involved a descent from 37,454 feet above sea level to 1,985 feet above sea level. This descent, which covered a distance of 112 nautical miles, took 18 minutes and involved a decrease of 35,469 feet in altitude. The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started overhead Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines, Quebec, Canada, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 24 at CYMX Montreal International (Mirabel) Airport was made from the northeast, with the aircraft heading 228.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,235 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 24, which had a length of 3,653 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 145 knots. The touchdown point was 104 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 137 knots, which was a little fast. However, the touchdown rate was good at -182 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.1 meters from the centerline, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of -22 °C, with a wind speed of 2 knots at 240°. The crosswind was 0 knots, and the headwind was 1 knot. The total landing distance was 1,066 meters, which accounted for 29% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good, and the taxiing period from the runway to the parking took approximately 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
Overall, the flight covered a total distance of 1,240 nautical miles and took 164 minutes, using 7,464 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 737-900 aircraft successfully landed at CYMX Montreal International (Mirabel) Airport, achieving a score of 99.1%. The final approach to runway 24 was initiated from the north east, with a heading of 228.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,235 feet above ground level.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway, with the threshold height being satisfactory. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 145 knots. The touchdown point was located 104 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating a slight deviation from the intended landing spot. The touchdown speed of 137 knots was also a bit faster than desired, but the touchdown rate of -182 feet per minute was considered good.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 3.1 meters, which may have been due to factors such as wind or pilot error. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -22°C, with a wind speed of 2 knots from 240°. The crosswind component was negligible, while the headwind component was 1 knot.
The total landing distance of 1,066 meters was 29% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain a stable and controlled descent during the landing phase. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score and demonstrating good control and stability during the final approach and touchdown phases.
