Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 500 ft gate: speed above the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,114 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 513 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 13 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 23L at Düsseldorf Airport (EDDL), with a takeoff distance of 939 meters, which accounted for 39% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 147 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions of 16°C temperature and a wind speed of 24 knots at 249 degrees. The crosswind was 7 knots, while the headwind was 22 knots. After departing from Düsseldorf, the aircraft began its enroute climb, which started overhead the airport. The climb took 22 minutes and covered a distance of 111 nautical miles, with the aircraft ascending from 1,205 feet above sea level to 34,380 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,175 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started overhead Egmond aan Zee in the Netherlands. This phase lasted for 29 minutes and covered a distance of 204 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started overhead Eastoft in England. The descent took 25 minutes and covered a distance of 90 nautical miles, with the aircraft descending from 34,806 feet above sea level to 1,529 feet above sea level, a decrease of 33,277 feet.
The final approach to runway 25 at Newcastle Airport (EGNT) was made from the north-east, with the aircraft heading 245.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,268 feet above ground level. However, the aircraft performed a go-around at 1 foot above ground level. The aircraft then landed on runway 25, with a runway length of 2,114 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was well above the target at 157 knots.
The touchdown point was 93 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 143 knots, which was fast. The touchdown rate was good at -185 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 12°C temperature and a wind speed of 32 knots at 280 degrees, with a crosswind of 18 knots and a headwind of 26 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,184 meters, which accounted for 56% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 421 nautical miles, with a total flight time of 99 minutes and a fuel consumption of 4,838 kilograms.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed at EGNT Newcastle Airport, achieving a score of 95.3%. The final approach to runway 25 was initiated from the north east, with a heading of 245.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,268 feet above ground level.
The aircraft touched down on the runway, which has a length of 2,114 meters. The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway. However, the threshold speed was above the target speed, reaching 157 kt, which may have been due to the aircraft's descent rate or the pilot's decision to flare earlier than expected.
The touchdown point was 93 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. The touchdown speed of 143 kt was faster than the target speed, indicating that the aircraft may have been touching down with a bit too much energy. Nevertheless, the touchdown rate was good at -185 feet per minute, suggesting that the aircraft was able to absorb the impact of touchdown smoothly.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 12°C and a wind speed of 32 kt from a direction of 280°. This resulted in a crosswind of 18 kt and a headwind of 26 kt, which the pilots would have had to take into account during the landing. The runway touchdown alignment was reported as perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at touchdown.
The total landing distance was 1,184 meters, which is 56% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the pilots were able to control the aircraft's descent and touchdown smoothly. The runway rollout alignment was also reported as very good, suggesting that the aircraft was able to maintain its alignment with the runway centerline during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft touching down safely and the pilots demonstrating good control and decision-making skills. However, there were some minor deviations from the target speeds and touchdown point, which may be areas for improvement in future landings.
